The Northeast has emerged as India’s fastest-growing monsoon travel region, while Cleartrip data shows a wider shift towards offbeat places, shorter breaks, solo journeys, rail travel and mid-range hotels.

India’s monsoon travel market is no longer behaving like a conventional low season. Cleartrip’s latest PeekABoo Trends Tracker indicates that hotel bookings increased by 53.9% year on year, while bus reservations climbed 140%. This suggests that travellers are actively using the rainy months for leisure rather than treating them merely as a discounted alternative to summer. The strongest growth came from the Northeast, where Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh led the destination rankings and demand expanded across Shillong, Guwahati, Itanagar, Jorhat and Imphal.

The pattern extends well beyond one region. Wayanad, Alappuzha, Kodaikanal and Ooty recorded sharp accommodation growth, while Goa, Puducherry, Visakhapatnam and Udaipur also attracted more hotel bookings. Younger travellers added another layer to the trend by choosing less conventional destinations, including Tajikistan, Lakshadweep, Muscat, the Philippines, Hubli, Leh and Tashkent. Gen Z also accounted for the largest share of train bookings.

Taken together, the figures suggest that monsoon travel is becoming more intentional, experience-led and evenly distributed across transport modes and destination types. The development matters to airlines, hotels, rail platforms, bus operators and tourism boards because it creates demand during a period once treated mainly as a shoulder season.

Monsoon Travel Moves Beyond the Traditional Off-Season Label

For years, heavy rain, uncertain road conditions and disrupted outdoor plans made the monsoon a weaker leisure period across much of India. Cleartrip’s booking data now points towards a different market. Travellers appear increasingly willing to exchange predictable sunshine for green landscapes, waterfalls, cooler hill weather, cultural immersion and quieter stays. The 53.9% rise in hotel bookings is particularly important because accommodation reservations generally demonstrate stronger travel intent than destination searches alone.

The 140% increase in bus bookings also shows that this is not merely an aviation-led trend. Road travel remains central to short breaks, regional journeys and last-mile access to hill destinations. It can support price-sensitive travellers who want greater flexibility without paying peak airfares.

Combined growth across hotels and buses suggests that the monsoon is developing into a travel season in its own right. Demand is coming from different budgets, journey lengths and traveller segments rather than one narrow category of holidaymakers.

Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh Put the Northeast at the Centre

Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh delivered the strongest destination growth in the tracker, with flight bookings rising 62% and hotel bookings increasing by more than 90% year on year. These figures place the Northeast at the centre of India’s monsoon travel story and indicate that demand is shifting beyond the country’s most established hill circuits.

The appeal is closely connected to landscape, culture and the search for experiences that feel less standardised. Nagaland Tourism promotes a combination of mountainous scenery, village experiences, festivals and cultural traditions. Arunachal Tourism presents remote valleys, forests, monasteries, wildlife and high-altitude routes as central parts of the state’s visitor economy.

Cleartrip’s figures also suggest that interest built during the summer and continued into the rainy season. This continuity matters because it indicates that the region is not benefiting from a brief booking spike alone. Instead, it may be entering a longer demand cycle supported by greater awareness, air connectivity and digital destination discovery.

Regional Gateways Show That Demand Is Spreading

The Northeast’s performance was not limited to Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh. Hotel bookings rose by more than 65% in Shillong and by over 60% in Guwahati. Flight demand increased by more than 70% for Itanagar, while Jorhat and Imphal each recorded growth above 50%.

This geographical spread points towards a regional network effect. Guwahati frequently serves as a practical gateway for multi-destination journeys across the Northeast. Shillong provides an urban base for reaching waterfalls, caves, viewpoints, lakes and rural experiences promoted through Meghalaya Tourism.

Itanagar supports onward travel within Arunachal Pradesh, while Jorhat provides access to upper Assam and surrounding cultural and wildlife circuits. Imphal adds another distinctive historical and cultural destination to the regional mix.

Distributed growth can benefit airport transfers, homestays, local guides, restaurants, smaller hotels and transport operators. However, it also increases the need for accurate weather updates, responsible visitor management and realistic journey times in areas where intense rainfall can affect roads and mountainous terrain.

Wayanad and Alappuzha Lead a Powerful Southern Nature Trend

Southern destinations also recorded exceptional accommodation growth. Wayanad posted the highest increase in hotel bookings at more than 160%, while Alappuzha rose by over 145%. Kodaikanal and Ooty each exceeded 70%, confirming strong interest in hills, backwaters and nature-based stays.

The numbers show that travellers are not following one fixed monsoon formula. Wayanad offers forests, plantations, waterfalls, dams and elevated scenery. Alappuzha, also known as Alleppey, is closely associated with canals, backwaters and houseboat experiences.

Kodaikanal and Ooty remain established hill stations with broad appeal among couples, families, groups and solo travellers. The official Tamil Nadu Tourism platform positions both destinations around misty landscapes, lakes, gardens, waterfalls and mountain experiences.

This variety strengthens the wider monsoon market. Travellers can choose between active exploration, scenic drives, slow stays and waterside relaxation. Hotels can consequently package the season through shorter itineraries, wellness programmes, food experiences and flexible indoor activities.

Goa, Puducherry, Visakhapatnam and Udaipur Remain Resilient

Rising interest in offbeat destinations did not weaken India’s familiar leisure markets. Hotel bookings increased by more than 110% in Goa, 104% in Puducherry, over 85% in Visakhapatnam and more than 50% in Udaipur. Their performance shows that established destinations can still grow when they develop a clear monsoon identity.

Goa Tourism can move beyond the state’s winter beach image through food, heritage districts, hinterland drives and rain-season stays. Puducherry Tourism offers a compact coastal break shaped by heritage architecture, cafés, spiritual spaces and beaches.

Visakhapatnam combines an urban waterfront with hills, cultural attractions and regional excursions. Udaipur attracts visitors through lakes, palaces, gardens, heritage and short luxury breaks.

These destinations also benefit from accessibility and recognition. Travellers can experiment with a different season while choosing places with established transport links, broad hotel inventories and sufficient cultural or indoor attractions to keep a short trip worthwhile when the weather changes.

Gen Z Pushes Travel Towards Unconventional Destinations

Cleartrip’s tracker highlights a strong youth-led preference for places outside conventional circuits. Tajikistan recorded growth of more than 245% year on year, the highest increase among the destinations listed. Lakshadweep rose by over 80%, while Muscat and the Philippines grew by approximately 70%. Hubli and Leh exceeded 65%, and Tashkent increased by more than 54%.

The list combines international cities, island destinations, mountain regions and emerging domestic stops. That diversity is significant. Gen Z travel is not being organised around one destination category. Instead, it appears to be shaped by novelty, visual appeal, cultural difference, affordability, digital planning and the desire to undertake a journey that feels distinctive.

Large percentage increases can sometimes originate from a relatively small booking base. Therefore, the figures should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of the largest absolute passenger volumes.

Nevertheless, the direction is clear. Younger travellers are widening the competitive landscape for destinations. Tourism boards and travel companies can no longer assume that only famous metropolitan centres, beaches or traditional resorts will dominate seasonal demand.

Train Travel, Solo Journeys and Group Bookings Reveal New Behaviour

Gen Z accounted for 45% of train bookings in the tracker, ahead of Millennials at 28%. Rail travel can suit younger customers because it combines affordability, extensive domestic reach and a stronger sense of journey. Overnight services may reduce accommodation costs, while routes through mountains, coastlines and rural landscapes can become part of the holiday experience.

Solo travel also strengthened. Solo flight bookings increased by 65% year on year, while group bookings grew by more than 25%. These movements are not contradictory. They show that the monsoon market is serving independent travellers and social trips simultaneously. Some customers want flexible, self-directed journeys, while others are using the season for affordable breaks with friends or family.

Travel sellers consequently need more precise products. Solo customers may value safety information, flexible cancellation conditions, central accommodation and convenient transfers. Groups may prioritise room combinations, shared transport and bundled activities.

A single generic monsoon package is therefore unlikely to address the full range of demand appearing across flight, rail, hotel and bus bookings.

Mid-Range Hotels and Short Stays Define the Commercial Opportunity

Mid-range hotels gained booking share, while short-duration stays remained the preferred format. This combination suggests that travellers want comfort and reliability without turning every rainy-season break into an expensive holiday. It also corresponds with the rise of regional road journeys, rail trips and quick flights built around weekends or limited annual leave.

The tracker additionally identifies advance planning as an important booking behaviour. Earlier reservations can help travellers secure suitable rooms, coordinate different transport services and preserve flexibility within weather-sensitive itineraries. Hotels gain greater occupancy visibility, while transport companies can prepare for sudden demand on particular routes.

However, the figures represent bookings recorded through one travel platform rather than complete visitor arrivals. The publicly reported summary does not provide absolute booking volumes for every destination, meaning that percentage growth may come from different starting points.

Even with this limitation, the commercial message remains valuable. Hotels, carriers and tourism authorities should develop destination-specific content, flexible policies, reliable local information and two- or three-night products. Monsoon travel is no longer a period to wait out. It is becoming a market that businesses must actively plan for.
