Digital travel platform Agoda has unveiled its AI Developer Report 2026, revealing a major shift in software development practices across Southeast Asia and India. The study highlights how developers are moving beyond using AI tools for isolated tasks and increasingly adopting autonomous AI agents that can support multiple stages of the software development lifecycle.

The report examines how this evolution is influencing developer productivity, technology investment decisions, organisational workflows, and the changing role of human oversight in AI-powered development environments.

Based on feedback from developers across Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, and India, the research explores the growing impact of AI adoption, while also identifying the operational challenges companies face as they expand their use of advanced AI systems.

AI productivity gains rise as developers continue human validation

The report shows that AI is generating stronger productivity benefits for developers compared with previous years. Around 60% of respondents said AI tools now help them save seven or more hours every week, a significant increase from 20% reported in 2025.

AI-generated code has also become more reliable, with 60% of developers stating that AI-produced code is frequently or almost always usable without requiring significant modifications.

Beyond coding assistance, developers are increasingly applying AI across a wider range of activities, including reviewing code, designing software architecture, debugging issues, improving technical knowledge, and preparing documentation.

However, despite increased confidence in AI capabilities, human involvement remains a critical part of the process. Around 90% of developers said they still review or verify AI-generated results either consistently or in most cases before implementation.

AI agents expand across businesses but adoption faces cost challenges

Autonomous AI agents are gaining momentum among development teams, with 60% of respondents reporting that their organisations are already using AI agents either in selected production processes or more widely throughout their operations.

Despite this growth, complete autonomous development remains limited. Only 40% of developers believe their existing codebases are largely or fully prepared to support independent AI agents operating without significant human involvement.

The biggest challenge preventing broader adoption is cost, identified by 30% of respondents. Other major obstacles include integration difficulties and governance concerns, each highlighted by 20% of participants.

The report notes that AI expenses involve more than just model usage fees. Organisations must also account for the resources required to build, connect, monitor, review, and manage AI agent systems.

Cost management remains a concern for many teams, with four out of five developers stating that they currently operate under AI usage restrictions, including token limitations, spending controls, and platform usage caps.

Growing AI independence still depends on human responsibility

While developers are increasingly comfortable allowing AI agents to handle lower-risk and easily reversible tasks such as documentation and routine processes, confidence decreases when AI systems approach production-level decisions.

The report found that 79% of developers still require human approval before software is deployed into production environments, highlighting that accountability remains firmly connected to human decision-making.

AI adoption is also transforming the skills expected from developers. The report identifies system architecture, AI understanding, and the ability to manage and coordinate AI agents as increasingly important capabilities for future software professionals.

However, the transition is creating different levels of confidence among developer groups. Half of junior developers surveyed expressed concerns about their future career security, compared with 20% of CTOs and Vice Presidents of Engineering.

The findings indicate that while AI is becoming a powerful force in software development, organisations continue to balance automation with human expertise, ensuring that technology adoption progresses alongside responsible oversight and workforce adaptation.

Idan Zalzberg, Chief Technology Officer at Agoda, shared, “Artificial intelligence is reshaping how developers across Southeast Asia and India build, learn, and collaborate. What began as a way to speed up individual tasks is becoming a broader change in how software is built. Across industries, developers are seeing stronger productivity gains and are beginning to use agents across more of the development lifecycle. But greater capability brings new responsibilities. The real cost is not simply the model call. It is the work required to make AI trustworthy in production. The organizations that will excel in this next phase will be the ones that manage cost carefully, build the right safeguards, and keep human judgment where it matters most.“
