Air Mauritius and MTPA Launch Ambitious UK Growth Plan Focused on Daily Flights, Luxury Expansion, and Sustainable Island Tourism Transformation

Air Mauritius and the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) have rolled out a refreshed joint strategy designed to boost tourist arrivals from the United Kingdom while repositioning Mauritius as a more diverse, experience-driven, and sustainability-focused destination.

The initiative brings together aviation capacity and destination marketing in a coordinated effort to strengthen Mauritius’ visibility in one of its key long-haul source markets. Rather than relying solely on its traditional appeal as a beach and honeymoon destination, the island is now pushing a wider narrative built around lifestyle travel, wellness, culture, adventure, and premium experiences.

Strengthening flight connectivity to support growth

A key focus of the strategy is improving air access between Mauritius and the UK. Air Mauritius currently operates up to five non-stop weekly services between London Gatwick and Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, offering more than 159,000 seats annually.

The airline is exploring the possibility of increasing this route to daily flights, depending on demand and operational performance. This potential expansion is aimed at improving travel convenience, supporting higher visitor volumes, and strengthening Mauritius’ competitiveness in the long-haul leisure segment.

The airline’s intercontinental operations are supported by a fleet that includes Airbus A350-900 and A330 aircraft. Further expansion is planned, with additional A350 deliveries expected from late 2026 onwards. These aircraft are set to improve efficiency, expand premium seating capacity, and enhance the overall long-haul travel experience, particularly for high-spending leisure and business travellers.

Moving beyond beach tourism to a multi-experience destination

Mauritius is actively reshaping its tourism identity in the UK market. While its reputation as a luxury beach and honeymoon destination remains strong, the country is increasingly promoting a broader mix of experiences to appeal to evolving traveller preferences.

Wellness tourism is emerging as a major growth segment, with increasing emphasis on spa retreats, mindfulness experiences, and nature-based relaxation. This reflects a global shift toward travel that prioritises wellbeing and slower, more meaningful experiences.

Adventure and sports tourism are also gaining prominence. Activities such as hiking, diving, cycling, and water sports are being positioned as key attractions, alongside golf tourism, which continues to be a major draw for premium travellers.

Cultural experiences are another expanding pillar, with Mauritius highlighting its multicultural heritage, cuisine, music, and festivals to offer visitors a deeper connection to the destination beyond its coastal resorts.

Rodrigues Island is playing a growing role in this diversification strategy. With its more remote and unspoiled environment, it is being positioned as a hub for eco-tourism and outdoor activities such as kitesurfing, trekking, diving, and cycling, helping to spread tourism benefits across the wider archipelago.

Upgrading hospitality and broadening accommodation choices

The accommodation landscape in Mauritius continues to evolve in response to shifting global demand. The island now offers a wide spectrum of lodging options, from boutique guesthouses and private villas to internationally recognised luxury resorts.

Ongoing renovations and upgrades across major hotel properties are reinforcing the destination’s premium positioning. These improvements are aimed at enhancing service quality, modernising facilities, and ensuring Mauritius remains competitive in the high-end global tourism market.

At the same time, growing demand for private and flexible accommodation options is encouraging diversification beyond traditional resorts. Villas, small-scale luxury stays, and personalised hospitality experiences are becoming increasingly important in attracting families, couples, and long-stay visitors.

Sustainability and regeneration at the heart of tourism planning

Environmental responsibility is a central theme of the updated strategy. Mauritius is placing strong emphasis on regenerative tourism—an approach that goes beyond sustainability by actively restoring ecosystems and improving community wellbeing.

Key initiatives include coral reef restoration, mangrove reforestation, marine conservation programmes, and improved water efficiency across tourism infrastructure. These efforts are particularly important for an island economy where natural ecosystems directly underpin tourism value.

Community involvement is also a growing priority. Tourism development is increasingly aligned with local participation, skills development, and small business growth, ensuring that economic benefits are more widely distributed across society.

This approach reflects a long-term recognition that preserving natural and cultural assets is essential for maintaining Mauritius’ attractiveness in an increasingly environmentally conscious global travel market.

Global marketing push and long-term positioning

Air Mauritius and the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority will jointly participate in World Travel Market London as part of their ongoing international outreach. They have also launched the “#WeareMauritius” campaign, aimed at strengthening digital engagement and expanding the destination’s global visibility.

The campaign highlights Mauritius as a multi-layered destination that combines luxury hospitality, authentic cultural experiences, outdoor adventure, and environmental responsibility. It is also designed to connect with younger, experience-led travellers who prioritise storytelling, authenticity, and sustainability in their travel choices.

Overall, the renewed UK strategy reflects a coordinated effort to reposition Mauritius as more than a traditional island getaway. By aligning air connectivity, product diversification, and global marketing, the partnership between Air Mauritius and the MTPA aims to build stronger long-term demand while ensuring the destination remains competitive, resilient, and relevant in a rapidly evolving global tourism landscape.
