ANA and Lufthansa are giving travelers more options where to go in Japan over the winter. ANA (All Nippon Airways) and Lufthansa have announced an expansion of their Free Domestic Airfare Offer which is set to open up new winter travel possibilities for UK and European visitors to Japan. The airline partnership has re launched the promotional sale which allows overseas guests to take an additional domestic ANA flight for free as a way to see the country beyond the usual cities during the 2026/27 winter season. The special value booking offer is available for a limited time only and can be used by eligible international airline passengers to extend their stay in Japan with an extra domestic flight on an ANA aircraft.

The special fares will be available for booking from 1 September to 30 September 2026, with eligible travel taking place between 1 December 2026 and 28 February 2027. The initiative is designed to make Japan travel more flexible while encouraging visitors to experience destinations outside traditional tourism hubs such as Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto.

Under the renewed offer, eligible travellers booking international itineraries can include up to two ANA domestic flight sectors without paying additional airfare. This Stopover & Add-on benefit allows passengers to build wider Japan travel itineraries and connect international arrivals with destinations across ANA’s extensive domestic network of more than 40 locations.

The promotion follows the success of the previous Free Domestic Airfare Offer and continues the partnership between ANA, Lufthansa and the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) to encourage more balanced tourism growth throughout Japan. The campaign focuses on increasing awareness of regional destinations and helping international visitors access areas that offer distinctive landscapes, local traditions, cuisine and seasonal experiences.

Growing interest in regional Japan has been reflected in recent travel research, with a significant majority of UK travellers now recognising destinations beyond Japan’s most famous cities. The changing travel preferences provide an opportunity for airlines and tourism organisations to promote lesser-known regions and support wider visitor distribution.

Japan has traditionally experienced high concentrations of international visitors in major cities such as Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto. While these destinations remain key attractions, the renewed airfare initiative aims to encourage travellers to explore other parts of the country, reducing pressure on heavily visited locations and supporting sustainable tourism development.

The free domestic flight benefit gives travellers access to a wide range of regional experiences. Visitors can explore the snowy landscapes and cultural heritage of Tohoku, discover the famous hot springs and natural beauty of Kyushu, or experience the tropical island atmosphere of Okinawa. These destinations provide different perspectives of Japan and allow visitors to experience the country’s diverse geography, traditions and regional lifestyles.

The Stopover & Add-on Free Fare initiative from ANA, Lufthansa and ITA Airways gives overseas travellers greater freedom to design customised multi-city Japan itineraries by combining international flights with additional domestic destinations. Passengers across all cabin classes can combine international flights with domestic connections, making it easier to include regional stops within a single Japan itinerary.

By expanding access to regional destinations, the initiative supports Japan’s wider tourism objectives of creating more balanced visitor flows. Encouraging international travellers to spend time in different parts of the country can bring economic benefits to local communities while promoting destinations that are often overlooked by first-time visitors.

Winter remains one of Japan’s most attractive travel seasons, offering experiences ranging from snow-covered landscapes and winter festivals to traditional hot spring retreats and seasonal regional cuisine. Through the domestic airfare offer, travellers can combine well-known city visits with authentic local experiences across Japan.

ANA continues to develop initiatives focused on improving international access to regional destinations and responding to changing traveller expectations. The airline’s domestic network provides a key connection between Japan’s major international gateways and its diverse regions, supporting easier exploration for overseas visitors.

The Free Domestic Airfare Offer is available for customers booking eligible fares during the September campaign period and travelling within the specified winter travel dates. Travellers will need to follow applicable conditions regarding eligible routes, fares and booking requirements.

ANA and Lufthansa have renewed their promotional offer, continuing to provide free domestic airfares for UK and European travellers, who wish to explore different regional destinations in Japan, over the winter of 2026 – 27.

The scheme aims to encourage visitors to take advantage of the free domestic flights, allowing them to experience more than the usual urban attractions of the likes of Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto.

With renewed support from ANA, Lufthansa and tourism partners, the winter campaign highlights a growing focus on regional exploration and sustainable travel across Japan. By making domestic connections more accessible, the initiative aims to inspire more international visitors to discover the country’s wider cultural, natural and culinary attractions beyond the traditional tourism centres.
