Nepal’s Laligurans Trail Tourism Project Opens New Himalayan Trekking Destination Connecting Nature and Culture
Nepal’s Laligurans Trail Tourism Project creates an eco-tourism route in the Himalayas connecting nature, culture, and trekking.
The government of Nepal is developing a new tourism attraction by way of the Laligurans Trail Tourism Project that aims to establish a link between nature, culture, and trekking in eastern Nepal. This project is being established in the Tehrathum and Sankhuwasabha districts of Koshi province in the Himalayas.
The initiative aims to transform the eastern hills into an attractive trekking destination by improving tourism infrastructure while protecting the region’s environment and traditional identity. The area is known for its rich rhododendron landscapes, Himalayan scenery, diverse ecosystems and unique local cultures, creating strong potential for nature-based and community-focused tourism.
The Laligurans Trail Tourism Project focuses on creating a balanced tourism model where nature conservation, cultural preservation and local economic development work together. Through improved trails, visitor facilities and community participation, the project aims to introduce more travellers to one of Nepal’s lesser-explored Himalayan regions.
New Tourism Route Connects Eastern Nepal’s Himalayan Landscapes With Local Communities
The Laligurans Trail project has been launched to create a new trekking corridor connecting different local areas in Tehrathum and Sankhuwasabha districts. The route is designed to showcase the diverse attractions of eastern Nepal, including colourful forests, highland landscapes, peaceful lakes, mountain views and indigenous communities.
The project will focus on developing and restoring trekking paths while improving facilities required for a better visitor experience. The development plan includes trail construction, route improvement, destination promotion, homestay development, cultural conservation and adventure tourism activities.
The project also aims to encourage private-sector participation in adventure tourism. Activities planned around the trail include paragliding, bungee jumping, zip-lining, mountain biking, rafting, kayaking and canoeing. These experiences are expected to diversify tourism opportunities and encourage travellers to spend more time exploring the region.
Launched in 2024, the Laligurans Trail Tourism Project is scheduled for completion in 2028. Once completed, the route is expected to become an important tourism attraction connecting remote communities with wider domestic and international travel markets.
Sustainable Infrastructure Development Strengthens Trekking Experience
A major focus of the project is the development of environmentally responsible tourism infrastructure. The trail is being upgraded through a tourism trail development programme that prioritises sustainability and protection of the surrounding landscape.
Infrastructure work includes trekking pathways, stone steps, dry-stone retaining walls, protective structures, side drains, cross-drainage systems, resting areas, public toilets, drinking water facilities and information signboards.
These improvements are designed to make trekking safer and more accessible while maintaining the natural character of the Himalayan environment. The project also includes plantation activities, including the expansion of rhododendron vegetation along the trail, helping preserve the region’s unique identity.
The project is supported through cooperation between international development partners, Nepal’s government, the Koshi provincial government and local authorities. The funding structure includes a 51 per cent contribution from the Swiss government, 22 per cent from local governments, 22 per cent from the Koshi provincial government and five per cent from the Nepal government.
Construction contracts have already been awarded for trail development, while additional funding has been allocated for supporting infrastructure required along the route.
By improving basic facilities and visitor services, the project is expected to create better conditions for trekkers, local businesses and tourism operators.
Rhododendron Forests Create a Unique Himalayan Attraction
The biggest natural attraction of the Laligurans Trail is its spectacular rhododendron landscape. Nepal is home to around 32 rhododendron species, and a large number of these varieties are found in the eastern Himalayan region. This biodiversity has helped the area gain recognition as one of Nepal’s most important rhododendron destinations.
During the spring season, the hills become covered with colourful rhododendron flowers, creating a remarkable experience for trekkers and nature lovers. The combination of flowering forests, green valleys, mountain scenery and fresh streams gives the region strong potential as an eco-tourism destination.
The project also places importance on biodiversity conservation. Native plants are being promoted along the route, while efforts are being made to protect local ecosystems and wildlife habitats, including areas connected with rare Himalayan species.
The natural environment is not the only attraction. The trail is also designed to highlight indigenous traditions, rural lifestyles and cultural heritage. Visitors will have opportunities to explore local communities and understand the relationship between mountain landscapes and traditional ways of life.
The project aims to create a destination where travellers can experience nature, culture and adventure together while supporting sustainable tourism development.
Himalayan Views, Lakes and Adventure Experiences Attract Travellers
The Laligurans Trail provides access to several scenic attractions across eastern Nepal. The route includes destinations such as Tin Jure Danda, Milke Danda, Gupha Pokhara, Rat Pokhara, Dhan Pokhara, K hoping Pokhara and Hyatrung Waterfall.
These locations offer diverse experiences, from peaceful lakes and waterfalls to mountain viewpoints surrounded by forests. The trekking route also provides spectacular views of some of the world’s most famous Himalayan peaks, including Makalu, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse and Everest.
The combination of mountain scenery, biodiversity and cultural experiences creates opportunities for trekking, photography, nature exploration and adventure activities.
The trail also holds importance from religious and cultural perspectives. Visitors can experience traditional practices, community events and heritage preserved by indigenous groups living in the region.
The development plan aims to improve access while protecting the authenticity of the destination. Instead of focusing only on sightseeing, the project is designed to create meaningful travel experiences connected with local communities and natural landscapes.
Twelve Local Areas Join Tourism Network Across Eastern Nepal
The Laligurans Trail Tourism Project will connect 12 local government areas across Tehrathum and Sankhuwasabha districts, creating a wider tourism network in eastern Nepal.
The connected areas include Laligurans, Myanglung, Phedap, Dharmadevi, Madi, Chainpur, Panchkhapan, Sabhapokhari, Makalu, Chichila, Khandbari and Silichong.
By connecting these communities, the project aims to improve regional tourism access, strengthen local participation and create new economic opportunities. Better trekking routes, improved facilities and stronger destination promotion are expected to attract more visitors to the eastern Himalayan region.
The benefits of the project are also expected to extend beyond Tehrathum and Sankhuwasabha by supporting tourism connections with neighbouring districts such as Dhankuta and Taplejung.
Through sustainable infrastructure development, adventure tourism, biodiversity protection and cultural preservation, the Laligurans Trail Tourism Project is set to become a major tourism initiative in eastern Nepal.
Nepal’s Laligurans Trail Tourism Project is creating a new Himalayan trekking destination in Koshi Province by connecting rhododendron forests, mountain landscapes, indigenous communities and cultural heritage. The project aims to boost sustainable tourism by improving trails, protecting biodiversity and creating new opportunities for local communities.
The project represents a new model of tourism development where nature and culture are connected to create a long-term destination that benefits travellers, communities and the environment.
