The Vatican Museums have announced the continuation of their collaboration with the Carlo Maria Martini Diocesan Museum for Lent and Easter through the esteemed event, “A Masterpiece for Milan.” Now in its sixteenth year, this initiative annually presents an extraordinary work of art to both a national and international audience.

This year, from February to May 11, 2024, the chosen masterpiece is Giovanni Bellini’s “Lamentation over the Dead Christ” from the Vatican Pinacoteca. The Milanese Museum will showcase this work, offering viewers a chance for both historical-artistic contemplation and spiritual reflection. The exhibition aims to deepen visitors’ understanding of the Passion of Christ.

The featured painting, a notable piece within the Pope’s Museums collection, originally served as the cymatium of the Pesaro Altarpiece. Bellini created this piece between 1472 and 1474 for the high altar of San Francesco’s church in Pesaro, and it now resides in the Civic Museums. This artwork is celebrated as one of the pinnacle achievements of Italian painting, highlighting Bellini’s maturity and his pivotal role in Venetian painting.

“A Masterpiece for Milan” initiative, featuring Giovanni Bellini’s “Lamentation over the Dead Christ,” is poised to significantly benefit local tourism. By drawing both national and international visitors to Milan for this unique spiritual and artistic experience, the exhibition not only enhances the city’s cultural offerings but also supports the local economy.

Hotels, restaurants, and other businesses in the vicinity can expect an uptick in patronage as art enthusiasts and spiritual pilgrims flock to the city. Moreover, the exhibition’s focus on engaging contemporary artists in dialogue with Bellini’s work underscores Milan’s role as a dynamic hub for both historical and modern artistic expression. This blend of the ancient and the contemporary enriches the cultural landscape of Milan, making it an even more attractive destination for tourists seeking diverse cultural experiences.

Bellini’s composition, set within a constrained space and depicted with a dramatic foreshortening, emphasizes the statuesque figures of Christ, Joseph of Arimathea, Nicodemus, and the Magdalene in a poignant moment of grief.

Further enriching the exhibition, a section is dedicated to the works of four contemporary artists who engage in a dialogue with Bellini’s masterpiece. This part of the display explores timeless and universally resonant themes such as death, pain, compassion, and notably, the significance of care.

The exhibition is co-curated by Nadia Righi, the Director of the Carlo Maria Martini Diocesan Museum; Fabrizio Biferali, the Curator of the Department for Art of the 15th-16th centuries at the Vatican Museums; and Giuseppe Frangi, the President of the Giovanni Testori Association.
