Passengers travelling through London Paddington face major rail disruption this winter as a £27 million track upgrade brings closures and revised services between London, Slough and the West of England.

The engineering programme will upgrade Dolphin Junction, a section of railway between Slough and Langley, as part of track renewal work designed to improve the railway infrastructure.

The first major closure is scheduled for Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November 2026, when the railway will shut in the affected area.

Further disruption is expected around Christmas and New Year, with the railway scheduled to close between 27 December 2026 and 3 January 2027, in addition to the usual Christmas shutdown on 25 and 26 December.

Why Are London Paddington Trains Being Disrupted?

The disruption is linked to a £27 million improvement programme at Dolphin Junction, where engineering teams will carry out track renewal work.

The junction sits between Slough and Langley and forms part of the railway infrastructure used by services operating through Paddington.

Because the work requires sections of the railway to close, train operators will need to alter services and introduce alternative travel arrangements during the affected periods.

The November closure is expected to affect a wide range of journeys involving Paddington, Heathrow and destinations west of London.

Which GWR Trains Will Run During the November Closure?

Great Western Railway will introduce special services designed to maintain longer-distance connections during the weekend closure.

Hourly trains will operate between London Euston and Bristol Temple Meads, while additional services will run between Euston and Swansea or Carmarthen.

However, these replacement services will not stop between Euston and Swindon.

Passengers will therefore be unable to use the special trains to pick up or drop off at intermediate locations including Oxford and Didcot Parkway.

Travellers heading to these destinations will need to consider alternative routes and allow additional time for their journeys.

How Can Passengers Travel Between Reading and London?

Passengers travelling between Reading and London will have an alternative connection through Guildford.

GWR will operate trains between Reading and Guildford, where passengers can change for services to and from London Waterloo.

The operator will also provide an enhanced service between Reading and Guildford, with additional trains running non-stop and completing the journey in approximately 30 minutes.

This arrangement is intended to provide passengers with an alternative route into central London while Paddington services are affected.

What Will Happen to the Night Riviera Sleeper?

The Night Riviera sleeper service between London and Penzance will also be affected by the November engineering works.

The train will still depart from Paddington on the evening of Friday 27 November.

However, its arrival from Penzance on Saturday morning will be into London Euston rather than Paddington.

The Night Riviera will then depart from Euston on Sunday evening before returning to Paddington on Monday morning.

Passengers using the overnight service should therefore check the departure and arrival stations carefully when planning journeys around the closure weekend.

Will Heathrow Express and Elizabeth Line Services Be Affected?

The disruption extends beyond GWR because London Paddington is also used by Heathrow Express and Elizabeth line services.

During 28 and 29 November, Paddington will not be able to handle services to or from Heathrow Airport.

Passengers travelling to Heathrow during the weekend will consequently need to use alternative airport transfer services.

The Elizabeth line will operate a reduced service between Reading and Maidenhead, but there will be no Elizabeth line services via Paddington to Abbey Wood or Shenfield during the closure.

Only the Bakerloo line will stop at Paddington on 28 and 29 November.

When Will the Christmas Rail Closure Take Place?

The Dolphin Junction programme will create another significant period of disruption over the Christmas and New Year holiday.

The railway will close from 27 December 2026 until 3 January 2027, following the normal railway shutdown on 25 and 26 December.

GWR has confirmed that the Christmas closure will affect all train services between Paddington and Slough.

Further details about temporary services and alternative arrangements have not yet been released.

Passengers planning Christmas and New Year journeys through Paddington should therefore expect additional information from GWR as the engineering programme approaches.

What Should London Paddington Passengers Do?

Travellers using Paddington during the affected periods should check their journey before travelling, particularly if their itinerary involves Heathrow Airport, Reading, Oxford, Didcot Parkway, Slough or destinations west of London.

The November weekend will involve extensive changes across several rail operators and routes, while the Christmas closure will affect the Paddington-Slough corridor for a longer period.

The engineering programme is intended to improve the railway infrastructure at Dolphin Junction, but passengers will need to plan around the temporary closures.

For anyone travelling during the affected dates, checking the latest GWR and transport information before departure will be important because temporary arrangements may change as the works progress.
