Algeria is now focusing on Northern African tourism, hoping to change a part of the industry that has been neglected for a long time. Countries like Morocco and Tunisia have already established themselves as hot spots, but Algeria is now promoting its stunning vast deserts, Mediterranean beaches, and centuries-old cultural landmarks to the world.

The country has also set a goal of 4 million visitors by 2025, an increase from 3.5 million in 2024. In the previous year, 2.5 million were international travelers, plus 1 million enjoying the visit from the Algerian diaspora. From Algeria’s urban hotspots and historic architecture to the Sahara’s untouched beauty, the country has so much culture, adventure, and nature to offer that is simply unmatched.

Revamping tourism starts with improving accessibility for travelers. Traditionally, visa requirements have discouraged independent tourism due to complicated and slow consular processes. To combat this, Algeria offers visa-on-arrival for southern provinces like Tamanrasset, Djanet, Timimoun, and Béchar, but only for clients of registered travel agencies. Payments are digital, and a 30-day visa is granted on arrival. These policies are clearly working as desert tourism is booming; last year over 16,000 foreign visitors traversed Algeria’s southern landscapes.

There’s a goal to expand this system to the entire country with a simplified electronic visa system for travelers to all regions. With this digital strategy, Algeria hopes to improve its standing as a viable option for international tourists and keep up with other neighboring countries that have long had easier entry.

There are also plans for the revision of the tourism industry. By the end of 2025, 16,000 new hotel rooms will increase the total capacity to 160,000. This expansion aims to serve cultural tourists who will visit historic cities and adventure tourists interested in Algeria’s deserts. With modern facilities and international-standard accommodations, comfort and the desire to remain for a longer duration will be heavily increased.

Tourism is already a major pillar in Algeria’s economy with about 450,000 jobs directly and indirectly linked to it. The crafts industry, which is closely associated with tourism spending the sector, employs over 1.2 million people, which includes almost 460,000 registered artisans. Growth in tourism potential is expected to create revenue for the local population and also aids in Algeria’s cultural conservation and promotion.

Digital transformation is the other major focus of Algeria’s tourism strategy. A national hotel booking platform and a payment system that is compatible with foreign systems is in the works which will enable hotel booking and licensing to be done centrally. This will eliminate a persistent problem for foreign tourists.

Algeria is becoming more well known as a Saharan tourism destination. While tourists would be able to drive over the vast sand dunes, ride camels, immerse with the locals partake in some of the clearest stargazing. Adventure travel is becoming increasingly popular, giving more exposure to the Sahara, making it a must place to visit worldwide.

Although Algeria has some advancements to make, they have some work to do to catch up to their neighboring countries. Algeria needs to stick to their timelines for execution and infrastructure building, and work towards developing their infrastructure.

Future plans aim to increase international arrivals to 12 million by 2030 and 14 million by 2035. Achieving these targets will necessitate continuous funding, ongoing innovation, and creative marketing to the rest of the world on the breathtaking landscapes as well as the rich heritage that Algeria offers.

The country is transforming a previously unproductive sector into a powerful catalyst for economic advancement by making access to Algeria easier, improving service and hospitality, and promoting the country’s rich cultural and natural treasures.
