As 2024 draws to a close, American Airlines is gearing up to accommodate approximately 12.7 million passengers on over 118,000 flights during the winter holiday season. This surge in travel follows a notably strong operational performance by the airline over the Thanksgiving holiday, highlighted by leading the industry in timely departures.

During the Thanksgiving period of 2024, American Airlines demonstrated remarkable reliability, canceling fewer mainline flights than its primary competitors. The airline achieved four days without a single mainline flight cancellation, three days without canceling any regional flights, and one day without any cancellations at all.

Here are six key points about American’s operations during the upcoming winter holiday season:

• The travel schedule is set from December 18, 2024, to January 6, 2025.
• The busiest travel day is expected to be Friday, December 27, with the second busiest on Friday, December 20.
• Over 1,500 mainline and regional aircraft will cover more than 102 million miles—equivalent to aligning nearly 1.1 trillion candy canes end to end.
• Throughout the holiday season, American will distribute over 6.6 million bags of pretzels.
• The peak travel moment is projected for 12:40 p.m. CT on Sunday, December 22, with 1,074 aircraft in the air simultaneously—the highest at any moment during the season.
• Last holiday season, passengers viewed nearly 20 million minutes of festive movies and TV shows, a feature that will be available again this year.
