Australia’s first luxury river cruise vessel, the PS Australian Star, is steadily taking shape, a project supported by the Allan Labor Government’s significant investments.

Tourism, Sport, and Major Events Minister, Steve Dimopoulos, recently toured Mildura to witness the construction of this premier vessel that will soon glide along the iconic Murray River, offering a world-class cruising experience.

With a substantial $2.25 million boost from the Regional Tourism Investment Fund, the government is helping bring this ambitious project to life. The luxury paddle steamer is being crafted by the local company Murray River Paddlesteamers, reinforcing regional tourism and creating an exceptional new attraction in Australia.

Later this year, a fully restored 1907 wood-fired steam engine will be installed on the PS Australian Star, alongside the completion of its main deck construction.

This world-class vessel, launching from the Port of Echuca, is set to host up to 38 passengers per journey. It boasts 19 ensuite cabins, a fine dining restaurant, event spaces, and a guest lounge offering panoramic views, with bars spread across two levels. The PS Australian Star elevates regional Victoria’s renowned tourism appeal.

Accessibility is a key feature, with designated cabins and elevator access to all levels, making it a welcoming choice for a variety of travelers. Cruises will offer three, four, and seven-night excursions, with planned stops to engage with riverside communities, further enhancing the region’s tourism draw.

Construction has generated 13 jobs locally, with 16 more to come once operations begin. The Murray region welcomed nearly 5.9 million visitors by September 2023, contributing close to $2 billion to Victoria’s economy, underscoring the vessel’s anticipated impact on local tourism, according to Minister for Tourism, Sport, and Major Events, Steve Dimopoulos.
