Carnival Cruise Line Launches New Rewards System With Points for Cruises, Dining, Spa and Excursions

Carnival cruise line launches new rewards system with points for cruises, dining, spa and excursions

Effective September 1, 2026 Carnival Cruise Line retired the existing loyalty program, introducing Carnival Rewards, which centers around an earn system that rewards points, eligibility for a new status system and cruise related services for the money guests are spending. Redeemable Carnival Rewards Points are decoupled from Status Qualifying Stars, and both are earned for qualified spend for different purposes while progressing through Red, Gold, Platinum and Diamond statuses.

The move signals the biggest shift yet in measuring loyalty of the Carnival brand during their cruises-it is no longer based off sailings primarily, but instead gives extra weight towards qualified spend during cruises and at sea and incorporates the traditional lifelong sailing concept separately.

How Does Carnival Rewards Work

Carnival Rewards uses two separate currencies: Points for redemption and Status Qualifying Stars for loyalty status.

Travellers earn three Carnival Rewards Points for every US$1 spent on eligible Carnival purchases, including qualifying cruise and onboard expenditure. Guests can then use available points towards future Carnival cruises and eligible experiences such as shore excursions, speciality dining and spa services.

Carnival has designed this structure to give travellers greater choice over how they use their loyalty earnings. Rather than linking every benefit directly to the number of cruises taken, the system connects rewards more closely with eligible spending during a Carnival holiday.

The company had originally planned to introduce the programme earlier in 2026. Carnival subsequently moved the launch to 1 September 2026, extending the previous VIFP Club earning period through 31 August while preparing members for the transition.

What Are Carnival Status Qualifying Stars

Status Qualifying Stars determine where a traveller sits within the Carnival Rewards status structure. Guests earn three Stars for every US$1 of eligible Carnival spending, creating a separate progression system from redeemable Points.

Carnival has established four principal tiers:

The structure means travellers can accumulate redeemable Points while simultaneously working towards higher loyalty status.

Carnival calculates status across a qualifying window rather than treating it as a permanently accumulating balance. The inaugural qualifying period runs from 1 September 2026 until 31 December 2028, giving members an extended first window to build their Status Qualifying Stars.

Carnival previously explained that its new loyalty model draws on elements commonly found in airline and hotel programmes, where spending and travel activity can both influence loyalty recognition.

What Happens to Existing Carnival VIFP Members

Past Carnival customers can find out if their previously earned Very Important Fun Person, or VIFP, status has been converted.

Carnival pushed itsVIFP earning windowto August 31, 2026 due to the deferral of its upcoming loyalty program. All guests who achievedDiamondunder the previous system by then will receive lifetimeDiamondstatus under Carnival Rewards, states aCarnival transition update.

Existing Platinum guests also get a transition safeguard. Carnival advised current Platinum guests receive lifetimeGold recognition plus an accelerated path to reachingPlatinumunder the new structure.

The transition is important for frequent Carnival visitors because the new system altering the basics of how to earn status moving forward requires everyone to investigate what VIFP-status does and does not affect rather than guessing a one-to-one comparison.

How Does Carnival Recognise Frequent Cruisers

Carnival has retained sailing history as an important loyalty measure through its Milestone Recognition Program.

While Points focus on redeemable value and Stars determine status, milestones recognise members according to their accumulated lifetime days at sea. This creates a third loyalty component for travellers with extensive sailing histories.

The approach allows Carnival to distinguish between spending-based rewards, renewable status and long-term cruising history. It also means travellers who value recognition for years of sailing can continue building milestone achievements even as Carnival moves its principal status system towards eligible spending.

Can Travellers Earn Carnival Rewards Through Everyday Spending?

Carnival has also connected the programme with the Carnival Rewards Mastercard, expanding the opportunity for eligible cardholders to earn outside a cruise holiday.

The card offers 50,000 bonus points after eligible new cardholders spend US$1,000 during their first 90 days, subject to applicable terms. Eligible Carnival purchases can generate up to six points per dollar when card earnings and Carnival Rewards earnings combine.

Cardholders can also earn two points per dollar on eligible restaurant and grocery purchases and one point per dollar on other qualifying spending. The card includes an annual 2,500-point anniversary bonus after US$2,000 in qualifying purchases.

Carnival’s official help centre confirms that the Carnival Rewards Mastercard allows cardholders to earn Carnival Rewards Points through purchases.

Travellers should compare the card’s fees, APR, eligibility requirements and full terms against their normal spending habits before applying. Credit-card rewards can add value for some frequent cruisers, but they should not encourage unnecessary spending solely to reach a loyalty tier.

What Should Carnival Travellers Do Now

Travellers planning a Carnival cruise should enrol in Carnival Rewards and review their account before making assumptions about their status or available benefits. Existing members should confirm that their former VIFP recognition has transferred correctly and check their starting position under the new system.

Guests should also distinguish between Points and Stars. Points provide redeemable value, while Stars determine status, so accumulating one should not be confused with holding the other.

Passengers planning significant onboard spending may also want to identify which purchases qualify before travelling. Keeping records of eligible transactions could prove useful if expected Points or Stars do not appear after the applicable posting period.

Carnival’s own newsroom identifies Points, Status Qualifying Stars and Milestones as the three central components of the programme.

Why Does Carnival Rewards Matter for Cruise Tourism

Ultimately, the programme is a move towards loyalty being generated through spending rather than by traditional airline or hotel group means, but Carnival Cruise Line tracks status and lifetime sailing achievements, while consumers earn loyalty value from eligible purchases. Within the cruise tourism industry, this could encourage passengers to look more broadly at their overall connection to a brand, rather than simply how often they cruise. For travellers, however, the relative importance of this system will lie with personal spending habits, cruising frequency and how they decide to redeem and which status level you achieve the benefits for.
