Vietnam’s Quy Nhon And Pleiku Boost Tourism With A Bold 2050 Urban Vision For Smart And Sustainable Growth
Vietnamese Quy Nhon and Pleiku promote tourism through 2050 smart urban vision emphasizing sustainable development and innovations.
There are significant efforts to undergo a huge urban change in Quy Nhon and Pleiku cities as these cities continue their developmental agenda up to 2050. The strategic vision seeks to promote tourism, innovation, investment, and sustainable development by forming two strong urban hubs in the Gia Lai province. While Quy Nhon is expected to form an advanced smart coastal city, Pleiku is to be formed into an advanced gateway for highlands linking coastal areas, central highlands, and border economic routes.
The approved master plans provide a foundation for future urban expansion, infrastructure development, tourism growth, investment attraction, and economic transformation. The strategy focuses on creating green, smart, climate-adaptive cities capable of responding to future social, technological, and environmental changes.

The Quy Nhon urban planning area covers approximately 1,190.81 square kilometres and includes 19 administrative units, consisting of 10 wards and nine communes. The planned area is expected to support a population of around 884,097 people by 2025.
The future vision aims to transform Quy Nhon into a comprehensive centre covering multiple sectors, including economy, administration, culture, education, healthcare, science, technology, and innovation.
A key priority of the plan is the development of an advanced ecosystem supporting artificial intelligence research, technology applications, and innovation activities. This direction is expected to create new opportunities for business tourism, technology events, research cooperation, and high-value investment.
Quy N hon’s coastal location remains a major advantage for tourism growth. The city will strengthen its role in maritime economic development, port services, logistics, high-tech industries, trade, services, and tourism.
Future development will be connected with important economic assets, including Quy Nhon Port, Nhon Hoi Economic Zone, and Phu Cat Airport, improving regional accessibility and supporting stronger visitor connections.
Smart Urban Planning To Transform Quy Nhon Into A Leading Tourism Destination
The future urban structure of Quy Nhon will follow a multi-centre development model designed to balance economic expansion, environmental protection, and sustainable tourism growth.
The existing central area will focus on redevelopment, urban renewal, and improved land-use efficiency. The approach aims to enhance infrastructure quality while maintaining the city’s unique identity.
Green spaces and ecological corridors will become important elements of the urban landscape. These areas will connect natural resources, including Thi Nair Lagoon, Ha Thanh River, and Kon River, creating a more attractive and environmentally friendly city.
Tourism development will be supported through a coastal tourism corridor connecting Ghent Rang–Quy Hoa with Nhon Ly–Ky Co–Eo Gio. This development will create stronger links between beaches, landscapes, and tourism attractions, improving Quy N hon’s position as a coastal travel destination.
A marine economic corridor will also strengthen connections between coastal infrastructure, logistics networks, and economic zones. This will support tourism services, maritime activities, trade, and investment opportunities.
New urban areas will follow the Transport-Oriented Development (TOD) model along major routes, including National Highway 19, National Highway 19B, and coastal transportation networks.
Science and innovation zones will play a central role in Quy N hon’s future development. These areas will support research, technology advancement, artificial intelligence development, and innovation-driven industries.
Pleiku Emerges As A Tourism Gateway Between Highlands, Coast And Borders
Pleiku is planned as a strategic highland growth centre connecting the Central Highlands with coastal regions and border economic routes.
The Pleiku urban planning area covers approximately 1,263 square kilometres and includes 13 administrative units, consisting of five wards and eight communes. The current population of the area is around 559,332 people.
The city’s location provides a unique advantage as a connection point between highland production areas, coastal economic centres, and international development corridors. Pleiku is expected to strengthen links with the Vietnam–Laos–Cambodia development triangle.
The new urban vision focuses on green growth, ecological protection, smart infrastructure, and preservation of local cultural identity.
Natural landscapes, including lake systems, volcanic areas, forests, and cultural heritage resources, will become key elements shaping Pleiku’s tourism appeal.
The city is also planned as a centre for innovation, digital transformation, renewable energy, advanced processing industries, logistics, trade, and services.
Economic development will be connected with agricultural and forestry production areas across the Central Highlands. Stronger links through major transport networks, including the Bo Y–Pleiku–Quy Nhon economic corridor, Quy Nhon–Pleiku Expressway, and Pleiku Airport, will support regional connectivity.
Highland Tourism Growth Supported By Green Corridors And Cultural Experiences
Pleiku’s future urban structure will follow a multi-polar and multi-corridor development model.
The existing urban area will remain the main development centre, while new growth areas will emerge around transport gateways and strategic locations.
Green corridors will connect lakes, rivers, streams, and forest areas to protect natural resources and improve urban sustainability.
The development of ecological and cultural tourism routes will create new opportunities for visitors seeking nature experiences, local traditions, and highland landscapes.
The connection between central Pleiku, Bien Ho Lake, and Chu Dang Ya will become an important tourism corridor, combining natural attractions with cultural experiences.
The integration of coastal and highland tourism between Quy Nhon and Pleiku could create wider regional travel opportunities, allowing visitors to experience beaches, mountains, nature, and cultural destinations within one connected journey.
Quy Nhon And Pleiku Prepare For Long-Term Growth Until 2050
Both urban development projects are designed to meet Type II urban area standards under Vietnam’s national urban classification framework.
By 2040, the planned urban and rural construction land area of each city is expected to reach approximately 28,000 to 31,000 hectares.
By 2050, this figure is projected to increase to around 36,000 to 39,000 hectares.
Population targets and land-use indicators will continue to be reviewed and updated during the planning process to ensure they match future development requirements.
The preparation cost for the Quy Nhon general urban plan is estimated at more than VND 19.3 billion, while the Pleiku planning project is estimated at over VND 17.8 billion. The funding will come from the provincial budget.
The planning process will include cooperation between domestic and international consulting experts to develop comprehensive urban development strategies.
Each project is expected to be completed within nine months after selecting the consulting organisation responsible for preparing the plans.
The implementation process will involve coordination between relevant authorities and local administrations to ensure the projects follow approved requirements and current regulations.
