Indonesia and Thailand travel is set to gain fresh momentum as TransNusa launches a direct Bali–Phuket flight connection, creating a faster and more convenient link between two of Southeast Asia’s most popular island destinations. The new route, which began with a fully booked first service carrying 174 passengers, strengthens regional air connectivity, supports growing Indonesian visitor demand for Thailand, and gives travellers an easier way to combine Bali’s cultural experiences with Phuket’s beaches, luxury resorts and marine attractions in a single holiday journey.

TransNusa has launched a new direct air connection between Bali and Phuket, creating a stronger travel link between Indonesia and Thailand’s most popular island destinations. The airline’s first Bali–Phuket flight arrived at Phuket International Airport on September 9 with a full load of 174 passengers, marking a major step in expanding regional tourism connectivity across Southeast Asia.

The new route connects two globally recognised holiday destinations that attract millions of international visitors every year. Bali is famous for its cultural heritage, beaches, wellness retreats and natural landscapes, while Phuket is known for its tropical coastline, luxury resorts, marine experiences and vibrant tourism industry.

By introducing direct flights between the two destinations, TransNusa is offering travellers a simpler way to combine Bali and Phuket in one journey without relying on connecting flights through other cities.

The inaugural TransNusa flight operated under flight number 8B541 departed from I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali at 11.30am before arriving at Phuket International Airport at 2.35pm on September 9.

The new service provides around 700 additional seats every week between Bali and Phuket, giving travellers more options for regional holidays, business trips and multi-destination travel experiences.

From October 3, TransNusa plans to increase the frequency to daily operations. The expanded schedule is expected to make travel planning easier for visitors from Indonesia, Thailand and international markets looking to explore both destinations.

The launch highlights the growing importance of regional connectivity as travellers increasingly seek shorter international trips that combine multiple destinations within the same region.

New Air Link Supports Thailand’s Tourism Growth Strategy

Thailand’s tourism authorities welcomed the new route as an important development for improving travel access within Southeast Asia.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) said the Bali–Phuket connection supports its airline partnership strategy and aligns with government efforts to make travelling to Thailand easier and more convenient.

Direct air connectivity plays a major role in attracting visitors because it reduces travel time and removes the challenges often associated with connecting flights. For Indonesian travellers, the new service provides a faster pathway to Phuket, one of Thailand’s most popular beach destinations.

The route also creates opportunities for stronger tourism cooperation between Indonesia and Thailand. Travel businesses, hotels, tour operators and local tourism communities in both destinations could benefit from increased visitor movement.

The new flight service allows travellers to create combined holidays featuring two major Southeast Asian islands, offering experiences that include beaches, local culture, food, shopping, wellness and outdoor activities.

Indonesia Becomes Increasingly Important Market for Thailand Tourism

Indonesia remains an important source market for Thailand’s tourism industry. According to tourism data, Thailand welcomed 429,778 Indonesian visitors between January 1 and September 7 this year.

The number highlights strong demand from Indonesian travellers, with Thailand aiming to attract 890,000 visitors from Indonesia in 2026. In 2025, the country welcomed 787,524 Indonesian travellers.

Visitor behaviour data shows that Indonesian tourists often prefer independent travel experiences. Around 84.70% of Indonesian visitors travel independently, while 52.86% have visited Thailand previously.

Their travel interests include exploring Thai cuisine, visiting historical attractions, experiencing local communities, enjoying spa and wellness activities, and relaxing at beaches.

Food experiences, destination choices and shopping opportunities remain among the key factors influencing Indonesian travellers when selecting Thailand for their holidays.

The growing demand from Indonesia creates new opportunities for Phuket, which continues to strengthen its position as a leading international tourism destination.

TransNusa Strengthens Thailand Indonesia Tourism Cooperation

The Bali–Phuket route is part of wider cooperation between TransNusa and Thailand’s tourism sector. The airline and tourism authorities signed a memorandum of understanding in Jakarta on August 4 to support destination marketing, tourism product development and improved air connectivity.

The partnership aims to encourage more travel between the two countries while promoting new tourism experiences for visitors.

For TransNusa, the Phuket launch represents another major step in expanding its international network. The airline introduced its Jakarta–Bangkok service on August 6, making the Bali–Phuket route its second new Thailand connection within a short period.

The expansion reflects increasing demand for direct regional flights and stronger travel links between Southeast Asian destinations.

TransNusa’s new Bali–Phuket direct flight is strengthening Indonesia and Thailand travel ties by improving regional connectivity and opening easier travel opportunities between two world-famous island destinations.

What the New Bali Phuket Flight Means for Travellers

The launch of direct Bali–Phuket flights gives travellers greater flexibility when planning Southeast Asian holidays. Visitors can now experience two world-famous island destinations through one connected itinerary.

For Indonesian travellers, Phuket becomes easier to access, while Thai travellers gain a convenient new option to visit Bali. International visitors can also benefit by combining both destinations during longer regional trips.

The new route is expected to support tourism growth, increase visitor movement and strengthen economic links between Indonesia and Thailand.

As Southeast Asia continues to see rising demand for regional travel, new direct connections such as the TransNusa Bali–Phuket service could play an important role in shaping future tourism patterns across the region.
