Governor Wes Moore revealed a significant milestone for Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, as it broke its all-time annual record for international passenger numbers in 2023. The airport welcomed 1,365,847 international visitors, marking a 2.58% increase over its previous high in 2018.

“BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport is a key economic driver and international gateway for our region,” said Gov. Moore. “We’re making Maryland more competitive, and BWI is helping us lead the way by boosting tourism, creating jobs, and expanding business opportunities for our communities.”
The economic footprint of BWI Marshall Airport is vast, with a total impact of $11.3 billion. The airport, alongside its visitors, underpins over 107,000 jobs across Maryland and beyond. Currently, BWI Marshall is embarking on several significant capital initiatives that promise to introduce new facilities and services for travelers, while also offering essential infrastructure support to its airline partners.
In 2023, the overall passenger traffic at BWI Marshall surged to 26.2 million, showing nearly a 15% increase from 2022, making it the busiest airport in its vicinity. The forecast for passenger numbers in 2024 is optimistic, expecting a full recovery to pre-COVID levels, with early 2024 airline seat capacity already surpassing figures from 2019.

Recent expansions at BWI Marshall Airport have seen the introduction of new international airlines, including Copa Airlines, Icelandair, and PLAY airlines. This month, Southwest Airlines commenced new international flights to Belize, and the newly introduced BermudAir began operations between BWI Marshall and Bermuda on March 18, enhancing the airport’s international service offerings.
“We’re working hard to enhance the travel experience for our passengers while supporting a growing air service portfolio,” said Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld. “BWI Marshall Airport provides convenient travel and excellent customer service for residents, businesses and visitors alike.”
