The historic heart of Pittsburgh has entered a remarkable new era with the grand opening of The Atterbury, Autograph Collection, a 300-room luxury hotel created through RLJ Lodging Trust’s extensive multi-million-dollar restoration of the iconic Fulton Building. The newly transformed property introduces a fresh hospitality destination where preserved architectural character, modern comfort and immersive social experiences come together to redefine downtown Pittsburgh’s visitor landscape.

For over 100 years, the Fulton Building has represented Pittsburgh’s legacy of progress, creativity and architectural excellence. Through its careful restoration, The Atterbury brings this celebrated landmark back to life while creating a contemporary gathering place for travellers, residents and the wider community. As part of Marriott Bonvoy’s Autograph Collection, the hotel becomes part of an international collection of one-of-a-kind properties, while also marking one of the city’s most significant hospitality openings in recent years.

Located in the centre of downtown Pittsburgh, The Atterbury offers guests direct access to some of the city’s most popular attractions and entertainment destinations. Positioned close to Market Square, the Allegheny Riverfront, PNC Park and the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, the hotel provides an ideal base for business travellers, sports fans, event attendees, wedding guests and leisure visitors. Combining historic charm with modern luxury, The Atterbury reflects Pittsburgh’s evolving identity as a vibrant destination for culture, dining, business and unforgettable urban experiences.

“The Atterbury was envisioned as more than a place to stay, it was designed to become a destination in its own right,” says Chris Johnson, General Manager of The Atterbury. “This building has been part of Pittsburgh’s story for more than a century. Today we are proud to reintroduce it as a place where people will gather, celebrate, connect and create lasting memories. We believe The Atterbury will become an enduring part of the city’s history and help define the next chapter of downtown Pittsburgh.”

Originally built in 1906 by renowned architect Grosvenor Atterbury for steel industrialist Henry Phipps Jr., the historic Fulton Building has entered a new chapter following a meticulous transformation into a luxury hospitality destination. Under the creative direction of Christine Shanahan, The Atterbury has preserved the building’s defining architectural character while introducing elegant interiors that draw inspiration from Pittsburgh’s industrial legacy, cultural identity and riverfront heritage.

The hotel’s newly designed guestrooms and suites combine historic charm with contemporary comfort, creating refined spaces for modern travellers. The accommodation collection includes stylish guestrooms and larger suites, highlighted by the Presidential Suite, with several rooms offering impressive views across the Allegheny River and PNC Park. Selected suites also feature private terraces, providing guests with exclusive outdoor spaces overlooking the city landscape.

A dedicated art programme further strengthens the connection between The Atterbury and its architectural roots. Inspired by Grosvenor Atterbury and his wife Astelle’s deep appreciation for the arts, the hotel showcases a carefully selected collection that celebrates both the building’s history and Pittsburgh’s transformation over generations. Guests encounter portraits of the Atterbury family, artistic collages documenting the evolution of the Fulton Building and the city, along with murals created by local artists. The collection highlights important moments in Pittsburgh’s story, including its steel industry foundations, riverfront development and cultural landmarks such as Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens and the historic Gayety Theater.

Among the hotel’s most striking features are the restored rotunda and the spectacular skylit atrium, which serve as architectural centrepieces. The space is enhanced by “The Moment”, an immersive music and lighting presentation designed to bring the historic surroundings to life. Presented twice each day, the experience combines projected imagery, dynamic lighting effects and a specially curated soundtrack to create a memorable visual atmosphere. The installation can also be customised for private celebrations, weddings, meetings and corporate events, allowing organisers to personalise the experience according to their themes and occasions.

The Fulton Room adds another versatile social space to the property, offering an elegant setting for informal gatherings, private receptions, business discussions and special events. Alongside this lounge, The Atterbury features almost 20,000 square feet of meeting and event facilities, positioning the hotel as a significant venue for conferences, corporate programmes, celebrations and large-scale gatherings in Pittsburgh.

Dining at The Atterbury is centred around The Drafting Room, a restaurant designed as a vibrant destination from morning until evening. The venue presents elevated interpretations of American favourites alongside creative cocktails and a forthcoming weekend brunch programme. The menu features signature dishes including Short Rib Pierogies with caramelised leeks and burgundy beef glaze, Neuske’s Wrapped Shrimp paired with cheddar grits and barbecue glaze, Braised Oxtail with potato croquette and dried horseradish, and Scallop Pepe Rigate finished with sweet peppers and Creole sauce.

The restaurant also offers a selection of carefully crafted starters designed for sharing and social dining. Popular choices include Charred Heirloom Carrots served with herb-infused goat cheese, pistachios and hot honey, as well as an artisanal charcuterie board featuring premium cheeses and cured meats.

The cocktail programme at The Drafting Room follows a design-inspired theme divided into three collections: “Blueprints,” “Permits” and “Assembly.” The menu blends traditional favourites with original creations. Highlights include Where There’s Smoke, a bourbon-based cocktail with smoky flavours, Bag o’ Cash featuring Botanist gin and cashew orgeat, and The Roman, a refreshing tequila creation combining tomato, peach shrub and fresh mint. A range of alcohol-free cocktails ensures that every guest can enjoy the experience, including the Tree House, made with cucumber, basil, lemon and honey.

Dessert selections including Moonshine Berry Cobbler and warm Challah Bread Pudding will complete the brunch offering.

To mark its opening, The Atterbury, Autograph Collection is launching special guest promotions designed to attract both leisure and business travellers. The Bonvoy Bonus Points Offer allows eligible guests to collect 10,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per stay for reservations made from 24 July 2026, covering stays until 23 September 2026.
