A groundbreaking initiative to champion sustainable tourism while uplifting women, young people, and rural populations has taken off in Cambodia and Vietnam, spearheaded by the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) through its Destination Eco-Talents (DET) programme.

From March 26 to 28, Siem Reap, Cambodia served as the venue for a dynamic workshop hosted by OIF, marking a significant step for the DET pilot project. Cambodia is among the first countries chosen to pilot this inclusive tourism development model, which aims to foster eco-conscious growth and social equity in the travel industry.

The project puts strong emphasis on equipping tourism professionals with the right tools and knowledge. Key priorities include capacity building through education and vocational training, advancing skills across the sector, and developing eco-friendly tourism experiences that highlight the unique appeal of local destinations. Another vital pillar of the initiative is the creation of cross-border collaboration platforms to promote regional tourism integration and strengthen stakeholder connections.

DET Centres will soon open in pilot locations like Siem Reap, serving as vibrant community hubs. These centres will host hands-on training, awareness programmes about responsible tourism, and showcase areas dedicated to locally crafted goods—helping communities connect their culture and heritage with sustainable tourism practices.
