Cruise ships have long been synonymous with luxury and relaxation, but a rising wave of gastrointestinal illness outbreaks in 2024-2025 is challenging that image. From Silversea’s Silver Ray to Cunard’s Queen Mary 2, and even popular vessels from Royal Caribbean, Holland America, and Princess Cruises, the industry is grappling with a series of health crises. With more than 40 reported illnesses on Silver Ray alone and 18 outbreaks logged last year, the question arises: are cruise lines prepared to safeguard passengers and crew against these recurring health threats?

Cruise Ship Illnesses: Silversea Cruises Among Outbreaks in 2024-2025

A gastrointestinal outbreak aboard the Silversea Cruises ship Silver Ray has left more than 40 people ill. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that 38 of the 681 guests and five crew members experienced symptoms such as diarrhea and abdominal cramps during the voyage.

The causative agent remains unknown. Silver Ray departed from Callao, Peru, on January 4 and is scheduled to dock at Florida’s Port Everglades on Monday. In response, Silversea implemented enhanced sanitation measures, including isolating those who were sick. The cruise line has not yet released a statement.

This outbreak is the second in 2025 to meet the CDC’s threshold for public notification, following a case of presumed ciguatera poisoning aboard a Sea Cloud Cruises ship earlier this month.

2024 Cruise Ship Outbreaks
The Silver Ray incident follows a year of notable cruise ship outbreaks in 2024. The CDC logged 18 cases aboard various ships, most of which were caused by norovirus. Here’s a look at the key outbreaks from last year:
