Torrential rains have lashed Chennai and various regions of Tamil Nadu, causing widespread waterlogging, severe traffic jams, and major disruptions in public transportation. Numerous bus and train services faced interruptions, while certain flights were canceled, attributed to a sharp decline in passenger numbers. The Meteorological Department predicts continued rainfall in the upcoming days. In response, the government has urged private companies to enable employees to work remotely, ensuring safety and minimizing commuting challenges during the ongoing weather crisis.

Chennai and various parts of Tamil Nadu were drenched by intermittent heavy rains on Tuesday, causing residential areas and roads to be submerged under knee-deep water. This led to significant traffic snarls and disrupted public transportation services. Bus operations were hit in several locations, while Southern Railway had to cancel four express trains, including the Chennai Central-Mysuru Kaveri Express, due to waterlogged tracks. Additionally, several domestic flights were canceled as there were not enough passengers to operate the services. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the state will experience further rainfall over the next two days.

A weather bulletin issued on October 16 warned of “heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy showers” expected over Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Chennai districts.

Chief Minister MK Stalin praised the efforts of sanitary and civic workers, as well as officials, for their dedication despite the ongoing heavy rains, pledging his full support to frontline workers.
