Croatia has recorded a consistent number of tourists in August 2025, with 4.96 million visitors coming in, repeating last year’s tally. Nevertheless, despite the level of tourist visits remaining consistent, the number of overnight stays in commercial and non-commercial accommodations registered a slight 2 percent drop to 31.1 million overnight stays from last year’s tallies. Data, which has been released by the Croatian National Tourist Board (HTZ), indicates a dynamic change in the accommodation demand and nationalities of guests.

Consistency in Tourist Arrivals

The number of foreign visitors remained relatively stable at over 4.4 million, aligning closely with the figures from August 2024. These travelers contributed to 27.2 million overnight stays, marking a slight decrease of 2 percent year-on-year. However, domestic tourism experienced a noticeable upswing, with 500,000 Croatian nationals opting to travel within their own country in August, a 4 percent increase compared to 2024. Domestic visitors generated 3.9 million overnight stays, with no significant change from last year.

Shifts in Accommodation Preferences

Commercial accommodation options dominated the tourism landscape, with 86 percent of all overnight stays taking place in commercial establishments. In addition, non-commercial stays accounted for 11 percent, and nautical tourism made up 3 percent of the total overnight stays. Among commercial accommodation providers, private households led the charge with 13 million overnight stays, though this represented a 2.8 percent drop compared to the previous year.

Next in line were campsites, which recorded 6.3 million overnight stays, a slight decline of 1.7 percent from the previous year. Notably, hotels emerged as the only major accommodation category to experience growth, with a 1 percent increase, bringing in a total of 5.1 million overnight stays.

Top Source Markets for Croatian Tourism

Germany continued to be the largest source market for Croatia in August 2025, contributing 6.7 million overnight stays. However, this figure represented a 5.8 percent decline from the same period last year. Domestic tourism ranked second in terms of overnight stays, with 3.9 million nights spent by Croatian nationals. Meanwhile, Slovenian visitors came in third, contributing 2.9 million overnight stays, down slightly by 0.4 percent.

The data revealed that Polish tourists emerged as one of the few markets to show growth. Visitors from Poland generated 2.3 million overnight stays, marking a notable 7.4 percent increase from the previous year. Other key markets like Austrian and Italian tourists experienced slight declines, with Austrian visitors contributing 2 million nights (a 3.1 percent decrease) and Italian visitors staying for 1.8 million nights (a drop of 3.1 percent).

Decrease in Visits from Czech, Slovak, and Dutch Tourists

Other European visitors, including those from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and the Netherlands, saw a downturn in their travel numbers. Czech tourists spent 1.3 million overnight stays in Croatia, reflecting a 4.5 percent decrease. Slovak tourists accounted for just over 1 million nights, a 3.9 percent decline, while Dutch visitors stayed for a total of 1 million nights, registering a significant 10.2 percent decrease.

Positive Growth from the United Kingdom

One of the bright spots in the source market data was the performance of the United Kingdom, which contributed 952,500 overnight stays, a 2.1 percent increase compared to August 2024. The growth in British arrivals reflects the continued appeal of Croatia as a destination for UK tourists, despite the slight overall decline in international overnight stays.

Looking Forward: A Mixed Picture for Croatia’s Tourism

The general image of tourism in Croatia during August 2025 presents a stable but somewhat mixed picture. Tourist visits are still robust, yet the marginal dip in overnight stays indicates shifting trends in the nature of accommodations used by visitors. Domestic tourism growth is an encouraging sign, with more Croatians visiting their own nation’s offerings. Additionally, the modest boost in hotel nights and the rise of Polish travelers indicate some encouraging trends in the context of the wider challenges for the industry.

Additionally, Croatia’s tourism industry is set to continue emphasizing drawing in foreign visitors from both established and new markets, as well as balancing demand for various forms of accommodations to maintain the industry’s long-term growth.
