On Sunday evening, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) finalized another preliminary agreement with the intention of renewing the collective agreement for the company’s 2,100 flight attendants. General meetings for the members are scheduled in the coming days to disclose the agreement’s details and subject it to their vote. CUPE has decided to refrain from making any comments on the matter until the members have had the opportunity to review it.
The collective agreement for these flight attendants, stationed at airports in Montreal (YUL) and Toronto (YYZ), expired on October 31, 2022. Formal negotiations commenced on April 27, 2023. On November 27, the flight attendants overwhelmingly endorsed a strike mandate with a remarkable 99.8% approval, marking the highest percentage in the history of CUPE’s Air Transat Component.
Following this, a preliminary agreement was reached between the parties on December 14. However, during the general meetings held from December 20 to 23, the flight attendants voted decisively with a 98.1% rejection, with an 87% member participation rate.
The Air Transat Component is a part of CUPE’s Airline Division, representing over 18,500 flight attendants employed by Air Transat, Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge, Sunwing, WestJet, Encore, Calm Air, Canadian North, Pivot Airlines, Flair Airlines, PAL, and Pascan.
CUPE, being Canada’s largest union with 740,000 members nationwide, advocates for workers in various sectors including health care, emergency services, education, early learning and child care, municipalities, social services, libraries, utilities, transportation, airlines, and more.
