There is now a greater focus on sustainable growth in Patagonia in Chile tourism as Magallanes anticipates another international travel season and aims to attract longer-distance visitors interested in nature and adventure. There is now more attention from Chile tourism authorities on the development of tourism destinations alongside environmental conservation and improved infrastructure. This latest policy initiative follows the growing interest in Chile tourism from long-distance markets. Tourists from Europe, North America, Asia, and Oceania increased by 13.9% in the first half of 2026, hitting the highest figures seen in the market since records began. For Magallanes, this presents an opportunity to grow tourism in Chile and conserve the landscape that has made southern Chile famous as an adventure destination.

Patagonia Becomes Central to Chile’s Sustainable Tourism Strategy

Magallanes is home to Torres del Paine National Park, one of Chile’s most important international tourism attractions. More than half of the region is covered by protected wild areas, including Torres del Paine, Bernardo O’Higgins and Cabo de Hornos national parks.

The region’s tourism offer is built around hiking, wildlife watching, photography, fly fishing, sailing and other outdoor activities. Its landscapes also connect visitors with glaciers, fjords, mountains and the southern Patagonian steppe.

This makes sustainable destination management particularly important as visitor numbers increase.

Chile’s Subsecretaría de Turismo has identified sustainable development in national parks as a priority, with its national tourism roadmap calling for improved infrastructure, connectivity and coordinated development in protected areas.

Torres del Paine Remains a Major International Draw

Torres del Paine continues to anchor Patagonia travel. The park’s granite peaks, turquoise lakes, glaciers and extensive trekking network attract visitors from major long-haul markets.

Puerto Natales is the principal tourism base for many visitors heading towards the park, while Punta Arenas provides the region’s main air gateway and an important starting point for wider Patagonian journeys.

The journey between Punta Arenas and Puerto Natales takes around three hours by road, allowing travellers to combine both destinations within a single itinerary.

For international visitors, this creates a natural multi-day route incorporating the city, national park, local lodges, estancias and outdoor experiences.

Electric Mobility Fits the Patagonia Tourism Model

The proposed shift towards lower-emission transport within tourism would be particularly relevant to a destination where long road journeys and transfers are part of the visitor experience.

Electric bicycles are already being used in tourism products around Torres del Paine. Sernatur has highlighted a multi-day e-bike experience that takes visitors through Patagonian estancias outside the national park while combining outdoor adventure with local food and cultural encounters.

Such experiences offer another way to explore the region without relying exclusively on conventional sightseeing vehicles.

However, any wider transition towards electric or hybrid fleets will depend on charging infrastructure, distances between destinations, weather conditions and the operating requirements of tourism businesses in remote areas.

Long Haul Travellers Strengthen Chile Tourism

Chile’s recent tourism data points towards a stronger contribution from long-distance international markets.

During January to June 2026, 529,018 visitors arrived from Europe, North America, Asia and Oceania, representing a record first-half figure for the series.

These travellers are particularly relevant to Patagonia because long-haul visitors tend to build longer itineraries around nature, adventure and special-interest experiences.

Magallanes authorities are therefore preparing the destination for the 2026–27 season with a focus on infrastructure, coordination between public and private stakeholders and visitor experience.

The regional tourism authority has also highlighted the potential for higher visitor spending from long-distance travellers seeking nature-based experiences.

Punta Arenas Connects Travellers With the Far South

Punta Arenas is the main urban gateway to Magallanes and serves as an important base for travellers heading towards Torres del Paine, Tierra del Fuego and Chilean Antarctica.

The city offers attractions including the Museo Regional de Magallanes, the waterfront and viewpoints overlooking the Strait of Magellan. From Punta Arenas, travellers can continue by road, air or sea depending on their itinerary.

Puerto Natales provides a more direct base for Torres del Paine and offers accommodation, restaurants, equipment services and guided excursions.

Together, the two cities support a regional tourism network that can distribute visitor spending across southern Chile.

Chile Targets Higher Value Nature Travel

Increasingly, the tourism policy of Chile is geared towards attracting more tourists, who not only come into the country but spend more time within it looking for experiences. One area which has been pinpointed by the tourism policy-makers of Chile as being highly promising is nature tourism. Protected landscapes play a key role within the global appeal of Chile. Within Patagonia, such a policy puts more emphasis on the development of infrastructure and visitor management, as well as the conservation of nature. Increasing global interest from the longer markets ensures that Torres del Paine becomes an appealing destination within Patagonia.
