Delta passengers at LAX, LGA, and JFK airports can now enjoy a faster airport experience just in time for the holiday season.

In 2021, Delta introduced its innovative Delta Digital ID at their Detroit and Atlanta hubs, offering travelers a seamless, hands-free way to navigate the airport. This cutting-edge technology, developed in close collaboration with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), is now expanding to three crucial coastal hubs.

Delta Digital ID employs biometric facial matching to eliminate the need for agent-assisted document checks, enabling customers to breeze through baggage drop and security checkpoints with enhanced convenience. This technology is available to customers who meet the following criteria:

How to Opt-in to Delta Digital ID:
Eligible customers will receive a notification in their Fly Delta app when traveling from a Digital ID-enabled airport, including Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Detroit Metro Airport (DTW), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), LaGuardia Airport (LGA), and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK, starting Dec. 14). Once opted in, Delta Digital ID becomes a part of the customer’s SkyMiles profile, and they can choose to opt out at any time. It’s important to note that Delta does not retain or store any biometric data.

Eligible customers can also opt into Digital ID through their SkyMiles profile on Delta.com. To opt in, customers must have a passport and/or Known Traveler Number stored in their SkyMiles profile.

With Delta Digital ID, customers can check bags and move through security without the need for a physical ID (following the post-launch verification period). They simply head to the appropriate line, look for the green “Delta Digital ID” icon, gaze into the camera at the bag drop and/or security checkpoint, and use their digital identity instead of a physical ID.

While time savings at security lines may vary depending on airport volume, Delta Digital ID transactions at bag drop take an average of just 30 seconds, a significant time-saving compared to the standard two-minute bag drop time. Overall, customers using Delta Digital ID report significantly higher satisfaction with the check-in and security experiences compared to other Fly Delta app users.

Allison Ausband, Chief Customer Experience Officer, stated, “We understand that a seamless airport experience is crucial for your overall journey satisfaction. With Digital ID, our customers spend less time fumbling with their wallets, and our agents spend less time checking documents. It creates an opportunity for our passengers and our staff to truly connect.”

TSA, Delta’s partner in this endeavor, sees equal benefits in expanding this technology to more locations. Austin Gould, Assistant Administrator, Requirements, Capabilities, and Analysis at TSA, commented, “Delta Digital ID helps passengers save time and enhances security effectiveness. It offers a simpler, more convenient experience while strictly adhering to passenger privacy and our security protocols, in line with our mission of safeguarding our nation’s transportation systems.”

In cases where the technology is unable to identify a customer, a trained agent will inspect the customer’s government-issued ID.

Since its introduction at ATL and DTW, Delta Digital ID has gained immense popularity, with a significant majority of eligible customers opting for this technology. This popularity will drive its expansion in the coming year, with plans to extend Digital ID’s presence to the international terminal (ATL-F) in Atlanta as early as January.

While Delta looks forward to introducing the technology at additional hubs in 2024, the launch of Digital ID at LAX, LGA, and JFK promises added convenience to customers during the bustling year-end travel season.

Greg Forbes, Managing Director – Airport Experience, expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “Delta Digital ID offers substantial benefits in terms of time-saving and convenience, and we’ve been collaborating with our partners for years to broaden its reach. We are thrilled to bring this technology to a new segment of our customer base.”
