Destination DC shines spotlight on connected capital & sustainability at PCMA convening leaders 2024

Destination DC (DDC), the official destination marketing organization for Washington, DC, has shared updates on the advantages of hosting events in the capital and outlined its convention sales and services strategies aimed at attracting events of varying scales.

Elliott L. Ferguson, II, President and CEO of DDC, emphasized the global competition for hosting meetings and events, underscoring the investment in marketing and sales through the Only One DC campaign. This initiative highlights unique resources available exclusively in Washington, DC, catering to meeting strategists and aiming to draw events that significantly impact the local economy.

The economic significance of meetings and events in Washington, DC, is underscored by an estimated 510,806 total room nights originating from convention center business in 2024, with an additional 273,178 room nights from non-convention center activities.

Melissa A. Riley, Senior Vice President of Convention Sales and Services, highlighted Washington, DC as the exclusive destination where planners can leverage intellectual capital and access influential leaders and policymakers. The strategic focus includes both large and small meetings, as well as international gatherings with a substantial global impact. DDC is excited about its partnership with the BestCities Global Alliance and is investing in new markets, including the UK, Mexico, and Canada.

The sustainability efforts in Washington, DC, are notable, with the city achieving Platinum level LEED for Cities certification, emphasizing carbon neutrality by 2045, and implementing various eco-friendly initiatives such as LED streetlights and electric buses.

DDC’s sustainability initiatives include the release of the 2024 DEI Business Fellows, the launch of the Sustainability District for easy access to local sustainability initiatives, and receiving the Innovation Award for its DEI Business Fellowship program.

The Walter E. Washington Convention Center has garnered recognition, including the Silver Stella Award and Best Customer Service accolades. The venue underwent significant upgrades, and Washington, DC, is witnessing the addition of 19 new hotels or renovated establishments, totaling over 3,506 new or renovated rooms.

New venues and event spaces, such as the National Museum of Women in the Arts and the Folger Shakespeare Theater, provide exciting options for event planners. Additionally, the White House Historical Association’s upcoming educational experience, “The People’s House,” promises a unique attraction opening in fall 2024.

Washington, DC, promotes a holistic approach to meetings with its “Vitamin DC” theme, encouraging wellness experiences in the city. The abundance of green spaces, fitness-friendly accommodations, and diverse wellness amenities make it an attractive destination for a balanced and health-conscious event experience.
