Disney Cruise Line has unveiled additional details about the upcoming production, “Disney The Tale of Moana,” scheduled to premiere exclusively at the Walt Disney Theatre aboard the Disney Treasure in December 2024. Infused with the rich cultural elements of the Pacific Islands, the stage adaptation draws inspiration from the beloved coming-of-age story, creating an innovative and immersive experience for audiences.
The show features an extraordinary display of puppetry, a collaborative effort between Jeff Conover, the creative director of puppetry and articulation at Disney Live Entertainment, and master puppet designer Michael Curry, known for his work in Disney’s Tony Award-winning musical “The Lion King” on Broadway. Notably, the production introduces a monumental puppet of the fiery Te Kā, a scale never before seen in Disney Cruise Line’s repertoire. As Moana encounters Te Kā and restores the heart of Te Fiti, the puppet undergoes a remarkable transformation, shedding its fiery exterior to embody the gentle island goddess, Te Fiti.
One of the highlights of the stage show is the debut performance of the song “Warrior Face,” featuring Moana and Maui. In this sequence, the demigod imparts crucial lessons to Moana on facing fears before confronting Tamatoa in the Realm of the Monsters. Alongside this new addition, classic favorites from the Grammy Award-winning soundtrack, such as “You’re Welcome,” “We Know The Way,” and “How Far I’ll Go,” will be showcased.
The narrative unfolds in the modern-day setting of the fictional island of Motunui, immersing the audience in a vibrant set design reflecting the diverse cultures of the Pacific Islands. Gramma Tala, the narrator, introduces her granddaughter through dynamic dance and songs in languages like Tuvaluan, Tokelauan, and Samoan, revealing the ocean’s choice of Moana for a remarkable journey to restore the heart of Te Fiti.
In a pivotal scene titled “How Far I’ll Go,” The Walt Disney Theatre undergoes a stunning transformation, evolving from the island of Motunui into the expansive open ocean. Twinkling stars illuminate the surroundings, while a colossal, glowing manta ray, embodying the spirit of Gramma Tala, hovers above the audience, guiding Moana on her courageous quest to save her people.
“Disney The Tale of Moana” joins the impressive lineup of beloved shows, including “Beauty and the Beast” and “Disney Seas the Adventure,” at the Walt Disney Theatre on the Disney Treasure. For additional information and downloadable assets, visit DCLNews.com.
