Malaysia and Sarawak have strengthened their position in the Asia Pacific tourism sector as PATA Travel Mart 2026 concluded its main business programme in Kuching. The international travel trade event brought tourism organisations, buyers, sellers, decision-makers and industry professionals together at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching.

The Pacific Asia Travel Association’s official programme confirms that PATA Travel Mart 2026 was staged from 18 to 20 August in Sarawak. The event was endorsed by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, hosted by the Sarawak Tourism Board and supported by Business Events Sarawak.

The gathering was especially important for Sarawak because it marked the first time PATA’s signature international travel trade exhibition was held in the destination. It also arrived during Visit Malaysia 2026 and PATA’s 75th anniversary year, giving Kuching a timely opportunity to showcase its tourism and business-events capabilities to an international audience.

PATA Travel Mart Puts Kuching at Centre of Tourism Business

PATA Travel Mart is one of the Asia Pacific region’s longest-running international travel trade exhibitions. Unlike a conventional consumer travel fair, its core purpose is business-to-business engagement.

The platform connects tourism buyers and sellers and helps participating organisations reach decision-makers, develop new commercial relationships and strengthen existing partnerships. Its reach extends across several areas of tourism, including accommodation, aviation, luxury travel, adventure, wellness and cultural experiences.

This business focus gave Sarawak more than simple destination exposure. Hosting international tourism professionals allowed the Malaysian state to demonstrate that it can support major trade events while presenting its tourism products directly to people who influence itineraries, partnerships and future travel programmes.

More Than 1,000 Participants Were Expected in Sarawak

Official Sarawak government information released ahead of the event said PATA Travel Mart 2026 was expected to welcome more than 1,000 participants, including international thought leaders, industry changemakers and senior decision-makers from more than 60 countries.

The subsequently reported attendance figure of more than 1,100 delegates from 48 countries indicates the scale of the gathering, although that final figure comes from industry reporting rather than the government and official PATA sources used to independently establish the event programme.

The scale matters for Sarawak. International business events can bring visitors with a professional reason to travel while creating opportunities for future tourism sales, meetings and destination partnerships.

Buyers and Sellers Meet Through Structured Business Sessions

Business appointments formed a central part of the Kuching programme.

PATA’s published schedule included seller-meets-buyer sessions alongside four formal business sessions. The first two business sessions offered 18 scheduled appointments, followed by another 17 appointments during the subsequent sessions.

This structure gave tourism companies and destinations dedicated time for direct discussions rather than depending solely on exhibition-floor encounters.

For participating destinations, these meetings can help establish relationships with tour operators and other travel businesses. For buyers, the event provided a concentrated opportunity to identify products, destinations and partners across the Asia Pacific tourism marketplace.

Sarawak Uses Global Platform to Showcase Tourism Strengths

Hosting the event also gave Sarawak an opportunity to place its cultural and natural tourism assets before an international travel industry audience.

Sarawak is Malaysia’s largest state and has a tourism identity built around nature, indigenous heritage, food, festivals and adventure. The destination is home to 34 ethnic groups and contains extensive rainforest landscapes, rivers, mountains, limestone formations, caves and coastal areas.

These assets support several tourism segments at the same time. Travellers can explore culture and food in Kuching, experience wildlife and rainforest environments, discover indigenous communities or move into more adventure-focused parts of the state.

PATA and the Sarawak Tourism Board have also worked together on destination resilience and sustainability initiatives. Sarawak participated in a Tourism Destination Resilience capacity-building programme launched with PATA in 2024. Their wider cooperation has included areas such as biodiversity conservation, sustainable urban tourism, carbon-related initiatives and green hospitality capacity building.

Tourism Experiences Extend Beyond the Trade Floor

The programme did not end with meetings inside the convention centre.

Destination experiences were designed to introduce participants to Sarawak through tourism products outside the formal trade environment. PATA listed experiences centred on gastronomy, responsible tourism and ecotourism and adventure.

One programme explored Kuching’s culinary heritage. Another combined the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre with the Annah Rais Bidayuh Longhouse, connecting wildlife conservation with indigenous culture.

A further experience took participants towards Bau District, including Fairy Cave, Wind Cave and Blue Lake.

These activities gave tourism professionals an opportunity to experience products that could later form part of destination marketing, tour development or travel itineraries.

Kuching Gains Business Events Exposure

The choice of the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching was also significant.

PATA identifies BCCK as Sarawak’s first purpose-built international convention centre. The venue has developed environmental initiatives that include managing food waste through a bioconversion process, with separated waste being turned into organic fertiliser.

For Sarawak, the event therefore supported two connected ambitions: attracting leisure travellers and expanding its business-events economy.

Government information indicates that Business Events Sarawak had already secured 53 events towards a target of 140 events through 2028, with those secured events expected to attract more than 25,000 delegates.

PATA Travel Mart Adds Momentum to Visit Malaysia 2026

PATA Travel Mart 2026 arrived at a useful moment for Malaysia’s tourism industry.

The event coincided with Visit Malaysia 2026 while also marking PATA’s 75th anniversary. Sarawak Tourism Board has been a PATA member since 1981, making the Kuching gathering another stage in a relationship extending across decades.

For Sarawak, the lasting value of the event will depend on what follows the meetings in Kuching. Business appointments can develop into new tourism programmes. International delegates can become destination advocates. Greater exposure can also support future conferences and trade events.

With the main PATA Travel Mart programme concluded, Sarawak has gained a valuable opportunity to turn several days of international tourism networking into longer-term partnerships, stronger destination awareness and wider access to the Asia Pacific travel market.
