Stung Treng Province of Cambodia is enhancing its efforts towards sustainable tourism development through empowerment of the local communities to convert natural resources into distinctive tourism products while ensuring preservation of the biodiversity and livelihoods of the community members. This was witnessed during the dialogue session held between H.E. HUOT Hak, Minister of Tourism, and the representatives of the eight tourism communities from Stung Treng Province.

This dialogue served as a platform for the discussion of the achievements, problems and possible solutions that the communities can adopt to improve their tourist services and increase awareness of Stung Treng Province as a growing nature tourism destination. The focus of the dialogue was on the critical role of the local communities in managing the tourism resources, conservation of the ecosystems and distribution of the benefits from tourism development within the local population.

Eight Tourism Communities Showcase Stung Treng’s Local Tourism Potential

Representatives from eight tourism communities participated in the dialogue, highlighting the diversity of community-led tourism initiatives across Stung Treng. The participating communities included:

• Tbong Khla Dolphin Pool Ecotourism Community
• Chour Veang Ecotourism Community
• Koh Preah Ecotourism Community
• O’Russey Kandal Ecotourism Community
• Borey O’Svay Ecotourism Community
• Preah Rumkel Ecotourism Community
• Koh Han Beauty Ecotourism Community
• An Indigenous Community

Each community shared experiences related to tourism management, visitor services, environmental conservation and local development. The dialogue allowed community representatives to directly communicate their achievements, challenges and support requirements to national tourism authorities. Their participation demonstrates the growing importance of local communities in shaping Cambodia’s tourism development strategy.

Natural Resources Create Foundation for Stung Treng Ecotourism Growth

Stung Treng has significant potential as a destination for nature tourism, ecotourism and community-based tourism due to its rich environmental resources. The province is home to diverse landscapes, including rivers, islands, flooded forests, sandy beaches, community forests, waterfalls, wildlife habitats and sections of the Mekong River known for freshwater dolphins. These natural assets provide opportunities for visitors seeking authentic outdoor experiences away from traditional urban tourism destinations.

Local communities have already developed a wide range of tourism activities, including:

During the dialogue, the Minister of Tourism praised local communities for their contribution to protecting forests, biodiversity, water resources and natural ecosystems. Community involvement is considered essential because residents are directly connected to the landscapes and resources that attract visitors. Through tourism activities, communities can generate income while encouraging conservation practices.

The approach supports a model where natural resources are not only protected but also become sustainable economic assets. Community-based tourism allows local residents to benefit directly from visitor spending through guiding services, accommodation, food production, transportation and cultural experiences. This helps create stronger links between tourism growth and community development.

Tourism Communities Encouraged to Improve Services and Visitor Experiences

H.E. HUOT Hak encouraged tourism communities to continue improving destination management by focusing on service quality, environmental protection and visitor safety. Communities were encouraged to strengthen areas including:

Improving service quality is essential as travellers increasingly seek destinations that combine natural beauty with comfortable and reliable experiences. The dialogue also supported Cambodia’s efforts to promote tourism during the Green Season, highlighting Stung Treng as a destination with year-round potential. The province’s landscapes become particularly attractive during the rainy season, when rivers, forests and natural environments create unique travel experiences. Promoting Green Season tourism can help distribute visitor numbers more evenly throughout the year and provide additional income opportunities for local communities.

Stung Treng’s combination of natural attractions and community experiences offers travellers an alternative way to explore Cambodia beyond traditional tourism routes. By promoting sustainable travel during different seasons, Cambodia can strengthen destination resilience while supporting local economies.

Stung Treng Represents Cambodia’s Future Model for Sustainable Community Tourism

The process of development of community-based tourism in Stung Treng Province shows how natural resources can become a tool for developing sustainable economic growth. By ensuring the preservation of the ecosystem and improving the experience of visitors, Stung Treng Province builds its model of tourism based on conservation and benefits.
