This Sunday, the president of FEHT, José María Mañaricua, in this Sunday’s La Provincia, talks about continuous difference between business leaders and government officials in terms of the extent of the revival of tourism on Gran Canaria after the covid situation. On the island, he presents his evaluation of the situation, emphasizing the conflicting understanding of the same information. As per Mañaricua, the vision of the business federation highlights the tough situation experienced by Gran Canaria in reviving its tourism.

Comparing the 2019 tourism data, which were by now lower than the ones seen in 2018 and before that, Mañaricua emphasizes that Gran Canaria, together with La Palma, hasn’t been successful to recover its tourism numbers that they had pre-pandemic times.

Gran Canaria, between January and July of 2023, has witnessed a 1.1% drop in international visitors compared to 2019. Compared to Islands like Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, and Tenerife have witnessed a rise ranging from 3% to 8.5% respectively. This difference increases anxieties in terms of the ability of Gran Canaria to actually recuperate its tourism.

Mañaricua disapproves the lack of leadership from tourism department in highlighting serious problems like the augmentation of resident housing in hotel areas, failure in terms of hotel capacity, and the decline of commercial centres.
