The ambitious Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Railways Project, which aims to connect GCC countries through a state-of-the-art railway network, is on track to be completed by 2030.

The announcement was made by Qatar’s Minister of Transport, H.E. Jassim Saif Ahmed Al Sulaiti, during the 26th Meeting of the Committee of Ministers of Transport of the GCC, held in Qatar with the attendance of GCC transport ministers and GCC Secretary-General H.E. Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi.

In his opening remarks, Minister Al Sulaiti emphasized the importance of unified efforts to enhance economic and social integration across the GCC.

He highlighted the transportation sector’s pivotal role in driving development plans, noting its influence on other cooperation areas, including trade, logistics, and sustainable growth.

“The GCC Railways Project stands as a cornerstone of our collective vision,” said Al Sulaiti.

“This initiative will not only streamline trade and logistics between our nations but will also connect economic and industrial zones to key ports, enhancing their global economic role and strengthening trade ties with Asia and Europe.”

A Vision for Integrated Transportation

The GCC Railways Project is one of several regional transportation initiatives aimed at diversifying travel and cargo options for GCC citizens and businesses.

It is designed to bolster trade movement, improve logistical connectivity, and offer safe and efficient passenger and cargo services. Al Sulaiti highlighted the significant progress made in recent years, with collective action advancing the project toward its 2030 launch.

Beyond rail, the minister praised the development of GCC ports, which now rank among the world’s most efficient according to the World Bank’s port performance indicators.

These facilities have seen substantial upgrades in capacity and technology, making them capable of handling diverse types of vessels while adhering to international standards.

Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation

Minister Al Sulaiti also underscored the GCC’s commitment to eco-friendly transportation infrastructure.

Recent advancements include integrating cutting-edge technologies to enhance efficiency and align with global initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and achieve carbon neutrality.

The GCC’s achievements in sustainable transportation have garnered international recognition.

Key Decisions and Updates

The meeting addressed critical developments in the GCC Railways Authority and Project, including the General Agreement for Connecting GCC States via railway, executive regulations for universal land transportation, and controls on conventional merchant vessels accessing GCC waters and harbors.

Ministers also discussed standardized conditions for granting driving licenses to offshore units outside international maritime conventions, among other topics.

The GCC Railways Project represents a milestone in regional cooperation, aiming to reshape connectivity across the Gulf. Its completion will mark a new era of integration, with wide-ranging benefits for trade, travel, and sustainability.
