In 2024, the global travel and tourism sector recorded 715 deals involving mergers and acquisitions (M&A), private equity, and venture financing. This represented a 4.3% decrease compared to the 747 deals announced in 2023, reflecting a slight decline in overall deal-making activity within the industry.

Insights from GlobalData’s Deals Database reveal mixed trends across different deal types. Private equity transactions showed robust growth, increasing by 26.1% compared to 2023. M&A deals saw a marginal rise of 0.4%, while venture financing activity experienced a sharp drop of 22.3%, indicating varying investor priorities and market dynamics.

Regionally, Europe emerged as a strong performer, recording a 17% growth in deal volume during 2024 compared to the previous year. However, other regions struggled, with North America experiencing a 26.7% decline, the Middle East and Africa falling by 27.8%, and South and Central America witnessing a 13.3% drop. The Asia-Pacific region remained relatively stable, with only a slight decline of 1.7%.

Country-specific trends also highlighted significant variations. The UK, India, and Japan achieved notable improvements in deal volumes, growing by 10.8%, 36%, and 45.7%, respectively, during 2024 compared to 2023. This underscores their appeal to investors and their growing influence in the global travel and tourism sector.

Conversely, some major markets faced declines in deal activity. The US, China, and France recorded decreases of 25.9%, 29.8%, and 26.9%, respectively, reflecting regional challenges and market-specific factors that dampened investor confidence in these countries.

Interestingly, deal activity in South Korea and Australia remained unchanged, suggesting a level of stability in these markets amidst broader global fluctuations. These trends highlight the varied performance across regions and deal types, emphasizing the evolving landscape of travel and tourism investments in 2024.
