Hyatt Hotels Corporation has debuted its Thompson Hotels brand in the Asia Pacific region for the first time with the opening of Thompson Shanghai Expo, marking a major milestone in the company’s global expansion of its lifestyle portfolio.

Situated in Shanghai’s World Expo district, the new hotel features 254 rooms and suites, extensive event spaces, and a vibrant selection of dining and nightlife venues. The launch brings the brand’s distinctive blend of bold design, cultural energy, and contemporary hospitality to one of Asia’s most dynamic markets.

A striking architectural addition to Shanghai’s skyline

Thompson Shanghai Expo is part of the Expo Place riverfront commercial complex, surrounded by key cultural and entertainment landmarks such as the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Centre, Mercedes-Benz Arena, and China Art Museum.

The building was designed by Goettsch Partners, a Chicago-based architectural firm known for its contemporary urban projects. The structure’s curved tower and glass façade are designed to reflect the Huangpu River, seamlessly blending modern design with the surrounding cityscape.

Inside, the interiors were conceptualised by SilverFox Studios of Singapore, drawing inspiration from the 2010 Shanghai World Expo pavilions. The design reflects a balance between Shanghai’s industrial heritage and its cosmopolitan vibrancy, resulting in interiors that are both modern and expressive.

Stylish accommodation with river and city views

Each of the hotel’s 254 guest rooms and suites offers panoramic city or river views through floor-to-ceiling windows. The interiors feature hardwood floors, modern furnishings, and marble bathrooms, creating an atmosphere that merges refinement with a residential touch.

Amenities include espresso machines, premium bath products, and integrated technology to enhance comfort. Many of the rooms are designed with open layouts, giving a sense of light and flow, in keeping with the Thompson Hotels’ ethos of relaxed sophistication.

Dining, nightlife, and events at the Thompson Shanghai Expo

The property offers multiple restaurants and bars, including a rooftop venue with panoramic views of the Huangpu River and the Shanghai skyline. The culinary program showcases local and international flavours in settings that encourage social dining and interaction—an integral part of the Thompson brand identity.

For events, the hotel features eight flexible venues, among them Thompson Hall, one of the largest ballrooms in the area. Spanning 1,100 square meters, it accommodates up to 1,150 guests for large-scale conferences, weddings, or cultural gatherings. These facilities position the hotel as a strong contender in Shanghai’s luxury MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) market.

Expanding the Thompson legacy globally

Amar Lalvani, Hyatt’s Lifestyle Group President and Creative Director, noted that the Thompson Hotels brand originated in New York as a cultural home base for individuals connected to urban creativity and community. Now celebrating its 25th year, the brand’s global footprint continues to grow, reaching new destinations known for their cultural and creative energy.

He observed that the brand’s recent expansion into Madrid was a key step into Europe at a time when the city is “buzzing like never before.” He added that Shanghai, with its similar spirit of dynamism and innovation, was the natural next destination for Thompson’s first property in Asia.

A new era for Hyatt’s lifestyle brands in Asia Pacific

The debut of Thompson Shanghai Expo marks a significant step in Hyatt’s strategy to strengthen its lifestyle and luxury portfolio in the Asia Pacific region. The brand’s arrival follows Hyatt’s continued investment in expanding its presence across key Asian cities, tapping into a growing market of travellers seeking design-led, experiential stays.

With its combination of architecture, art, and social energy, Thompson Shanghai Expo captures the essence of both Shanghai and the Thompson brand. It represents a fusion of local culture and international design, bringing to life Hyatt’s vision of hospitality that resonates with the creative and the curious.
