Tourism New Zealand and WellingtonNZ have joined forces to launch an industry collaboration featuring New Zealand food culture and travel trade. The collaboration focuses on teaming travel sellers from Australia with prize opportunities to experience New Zealand’s Culture and Food after completing the Advanced New Zealand Cuisine module, a component of the New Zealand Specialist Program. The program runs from August 17 to September 6. This campaign will enhance tour seller know-how of travel offerings with focus on New Zealand and Wellington’s culinary offerings package made up of return flights and 6 days 5 nights of accommodation along with curated culinary, cultural offerings and wildlife activities.
This campaign is constructed to enhance tour seller expertise in holiday selling in New Zealand from Australia. Tourism New Zealand will leverage the New Zealand Specialist Program to enhance knowledge of Wellington’s food choices and drinking establishments and activities that offer lifestyle holidays to help travel sellers improve the quality of itinerary offerings to clients.

The prize package also includes access to some of Wellington’s leading cultural attractions. The winner can enjoy a Te Papa Tongarewa highlights tour with high tea or choose a Wētā Workshop experience, connecting travellers with New Zealand’s national museum, creative industries and internationally recognised film-making heritage. The initiative places strong emphasis on Wellington’s food and beverage scene, highlighting the city’s growing position as a destination for culinary travellers seeking authentic local experiences.
The competition is linked to the 100% Pure New Zealand Specialist Programme, an online education platform developed by Tourism New Zealand to help travel professionals improve their destination knowledge and create more informed holiday recommendations. The programme provides travel sellers with structured learning opportunities covering different aspects of New Zealand tourism.
To qualify for the Wellington prize draw, Australian travel advisors must complete the New Zealand Cuisine advanced course during the promotional period and submit the official entry form provided after course completion. Travel sellers who previously completed the cuisine course can retake the course test during the promotion window to validate their participation. The training approach reflects the increasing importance of destination expertise within the travel industry. As travellers continue to seek personalised experiences, travel advisors with detailed destination knowledge are better positioned to recommend activities, accommodation options and specialist products.
Tourism New Zealand has continued to develop its specialist programme as a key resource for travel professionals, offering flexible online learning designed around the needs of busy advisors. The programme includes short courses that allow sellers to build knowledge across multiple areas of New Zealand tourism.
The Wellington prize itinerary focuses heavily on the city’s reputation for exceptional food and beverage experiences. The winner will take part in The Classic New Zealand Wine Trail full-day winery tour, operated with Zozo Travel, offering an opportunity to explore the wine-producing region surrounding Wellington. The package also includes the Capital Bites food tour with The Big Foody, highlighting local flavours and culinary businesses across the city. This experience supports Wellington’s identity as a destination where visitors can discover regional products, independent eateries and creative dining concepts.
The itinerary continues with a Zealandia by Night wildlife tour, introducing visitors to New Zealand’s conservation efforts and native wildlife experiences. Zealandia is one of Wellington’s major eco-tourism attractions, providing travellers with opportunities to experience protected natural environments close to the city. Additional experiences include a Garage Project beer workshop, subject to availability, and entry to the current exhibition at Tākina, Wellington’s convention and exhibition centre, also subject to availability. Together, these activities showcase the destination’s combination of craft culture, innovation and visitor experiences.
The promotion period runs until September 6, 2026, giving Australian travel sellers a limited opportunity to complete the required training and enter the competition. The prize travel redemption period runs from September 21, 2026, until April 30, 2027, excluding the blackout period from December 1, 2026, to January 31, 2027.
By connecting education with first-hand destination experience, the campaign aims to create stronger links between New Zealand tourism suppliers and the Australian travel trade market. Australia remains an important source market for New Zealand, making travel advisor knowledge a key factor in encouraging visitors to explore destinations beyond traditional holiday routes. The Wellington-focused initiative also supports wider tourism efforts to promote year-round travel experiences. Tourism New Zealand has previously highlighted the importance of strengthening trade knowledge to encourage advisors to sell New Zealand across different seasons and travel themes.
Wellington is adding to its international tourism offerings by combining food, culture, nature, and creative experiences. The city’s organized urban planning means visitors can easily draw together dining, activities, entertainment, and sightseeing. Tourism New Zealand and WellingtonNZ have joined efforts to provide a travel prize, which further moves Wellington away from being another basic gateway destination, and instead offers an in-depth journey that encapsulates the food, history, wildlife, and innovation of the region.
This travel prize gives Australian travel sellers the chance to promote Wellington to potential travel consumers, while allowing the sellers to gain a firsthand account of the region and services offered. Wellington thinks this campaign illustrates how the region means to attract people who are interested in a travel experience that is not basic, but rather fulfills their need for unique, connected experiences. To make this a reality, Tourism New Zealand is offering workshops to develop the travel sellers’ specialization to better cater to visitors to Aotearoa New Zealand.
