The Sydney International Convention Centre (ICC Sydney), operated by ASM Global, cements its reputation as the top choice for event planners and participants with its focus on creating events that are inclusive, have a positive social impact, and are sustainable. These events emphasize health, personal connections, and technologies that enhance the human experience.

A recent study, ‘RESPECT: Shaping Events for Success,’ conducted by McCrindle and ICC Sydney, reveals that a significant portion of Australians engaged in local entertainment and business events in 2023, noting a substantial participation from the Gen Z demographic.

Geoff Donaghy, CEO of ICC Sydney and Group Director of Convention Centres for ASM Global in the Asia-Pacific region, emphasized that the report underlines the critical nature of events that are socially meaningful, sustainable, accessible, innovative, and connected for the Australian public.

“Through a demonstration of our commitment to engage with all generations, the report underpins ASM Global’s commitment to operating a venue that meets the expectations of event organisers and attendees of today and tomorrow,” Mr Donaghy said.

Placemaking NSW Chief Executive, Anita Mitchell said: “As Australia’s premier convention, exhibition and entertainment venue, ICC Sydney’s contribution to the tourism economy has long been recognised. Beyond this, the venue, located in the heart of Darling Harbour connects locals and visitors to the much loved vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable waterfront precinct. People from across the globe connect at ICC Sydney to learn about our rich local culture and history, share knowledge, access entertainment and elevate their wellbeing – importantly they have the opportunity to leave a positive legacy for our community long after the conclusion of events. ICC Sydney’s Respect: Shaping Events for Success report stands apart as a resource reflecting the views and behaviours of Australians and how they engage with business and entertainment events, and importantly – the growing demand for sustainable best practices such as those delivered at ICC Sydney.”

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE REPORT

A majority of Australians (with notable participation across generations) recognize the importance of events being accessible and welcoming to everyone.
Nearly half of those surveyed appreciate events that support personal growth and community assistance.
The integration of inclusion, community engagement, cultural representation, and diversity in events is highly valued for its social impact.
Gen Z attendees, in particular, look for uniqueness and customization in their event experiences.
A significant number of respondents, especially within the Gen Z group, prioritize sustainable and eco-friendly event practices.
For event professionals worldwide, sustainability is a critical factor, with over half considering a venue’s commitment to environmental responsibility as a major factor in their decision-making.
The emphasis on health and well-being at events is crucial for a majority of Australians, especially millennials.
Gen Y participants place a high value on the smooth integration of technology in events.
Gen Z attendees are most likely to seek out opportunities for making new connections at events and view social media as an effective tool for fostering these connections.
Mark McCrindle, a social researcher and demographer, believes these local findings could influence global event trends.

“Australians have returned to events with fresh expectations. Our quickly evolving society, culture, environment and technology are shaping their outlook and sentiment. In particular, Gen Z seeks to engage with events in new and immersive ways that prioritise human connection and social impact – all these elements are already supported at ICC Sydney every day,” Mr McCrindle said.

Samantha Glass, ICC Sydney’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Communication, and Sustainability, highlighted that their business practices, rooted in respect, reflect global market trends and insights from their team. These practices enable the creation of immersive experiences that are inclusive and prioritize attendee well-being, integrating sustainable and respectful elements with local cultural experiences through advanced technology solutions.

“Events practising RESPECT, create a welcoming experience for people of all abilities, cultures and identities — while protecting the planet — allowing our People and our Places to flourish,” Ms Glass said.

The ‘RESPECT: Shaping Future Events’ report by ICC Sydney offers guidance to the industry on innovative approaches for redefining business events, aiming to generate meaningful experiences for attendees across multiple generations.
