Jet2holidays, sustainability,

Jet2holidays has introduced an innovative hotel sustainability labeling initiative, enabling both customers and independent travel agents to effortlessly identify and select from a curated assortment of hotels certified as sustainable according to the stringent standards recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).

Launched today, the hotels within this exclusive collection can be readily discerned on Jet2holidays’ official website, as well as on its trade platform, thanks to a conspicuous label designating them as “Certified Sustainable Hotels.” Additionally, the UK’s largest tour operator has unveiled a brand-new web page dedicated to “Certified Sustainable Hotels,” serving as a one-stop destination where the entire collection of over 800 hotels can be explored: www.jet2holidays.com/sustainable-hotels

Customers and independent travel agents, upon visiting this page or spotting the “Certified Sustainable Hotel” label, can rest assured that these accommodations meet the GSTC-Recognized standards. These standards encompass a range of criteria, including sustainable hotel management practices, support for the local community, promotion of positive cultural impacts, and a commitment to environmental protection.

The GSTC is responsible for managing the GSTC Criteria, universally acknowledged as the benchmark for sustainable travel and tourism. It also provides international accreditation to Certification Bodies specializing in sustainable tourism. Notably, Jet2holidays joined the ranks of GSTC members in September 2021.

In conjunction with the launch of a new Sustainable Hotel Charter, Jet2holidays is actively encouraging and assisting its hotel partners in obtaining the Green Key certification from the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), a GSTC-Recognized standard for hotel sustainability. This initiative will further expand the “Certified Sustainable Hotels” collection offered by Jet2holidays.

These announcements signify a crucial step in Jet2.com and Jet2holidays’ ongoing commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, aligning with government targets. The company’s comprehensive sustainability strategy outlines its objectives and initiatives, with an upcoming update scheduled for release in 2024.

Key components of this strategy include an equity investment in a novel Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production facility to be constructed in the North West of England, representing a groundbreaking move in UK aviation. The Fulcrum NorthPoint facility, developed by Fulcrum BioEnergy Ltd, will operate as a Waste-to-Fuels plant and is expected to commence SAF production by 2027, with Jet2.com slated to receive a substantial volume of SAF once operations commence.

Furthermore, Jet2.com is taking tangible steps such as acquiring 98 firm-ordered Airbus A320/A321 neo aircraft, with potential expansion to 146 aircraft in the future. This initiative aims to enhance efficiency and reduce emissions per passenger, providing a more eco-friendly travel experience with Jet2.com and Jet2holidays. The airline also runs a voluntary carbon offsetting program, one of the largest among airlines worldwide, where it assigns a value to every tonne of carbon emitted by its flights, excluding those covered by the UK and EU Emissions Trading Schemes, including free allowances.

In a significant achievement this month, Jet2.com secured a Platinum rating, ranking among the top 10 airlines globally in the Global Airline Sustainability Benchmarking and Rating Report 2023, as published by CAPA (Centre for Aviation) and Envest Global. This Platinum rating was based on various factors, including CO2 emissions per Revenue Passenger Kilometer (CO2 per RPK), with data demonstrating that Jet2.com ranked fourth globally in this category. The report’s CO2 per RPK metric serves as a reliable indicator of an airline’s carbon efficiency in transporting passengers across its network.

Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays said: “As well as enjoying the award-winning experience of a Jet2holiday, customers increasingly want to know that their holidays are more sustainable. The launch of our Certified Sustainable Hotels labelling scheme gives customers and independent travel agents the ability to easily search and book with that in mind, so that they can choose a holiday that is right for them.”

He added: “We are also announcing our new Sustainable Hotel Charter and agreement with Green Key today, which means more hotels can adhere to GSTC-Recognised standards too. This will see our collection of Certified Sustainable Hotels become bigger and better, giving customers more choice. As a responsible airline and tour operator, we have already taken many tangible steps on our journey to reach our sustainability targets and today is the latest example of how we are continuing our work to become more sustainable in the air, on the ground and in resort.”

“We congratulate Jet2holidays for this initiative. The growing movement of hotels aligning with the Four Pillars of the GSTC Criteria reflects a powerful, irreversible trend towards sustainable practices. By adopting this holistic approach to sustainability, we’re collectively embarking on a transformative journey towards a brighter, more responsible future,” says Randy Durband, GSTC CEO.
