Guyana Leads Caribbean Tourism Future as SOTIC 2026 Targets Smart Growth and Innovation

Guyana is poised to become the region’s next tourism leader as His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali addresses the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s (CTO) State of the Tourism Industry Conference (SOTIC) 2026 as the keynote speaker. The event in Georgetown will showcase the region’s upcoming tourism growth through the lenses of innovation, sustainability and resilience and balanced tourism development. Local tourism destinations will have the opportunity to transform their businesses to meet the evolving international travel requirements and preserve their preparedness to deal with future travel challenges.

Taking place in Georgetown, Guyana, from October 5–9, 2026, SOTIC 2026 will be organised under the theme “Tourism Futures: Smart, Sustainable and Inclusive.” President Ali’s keynote will set the direction for discussions on how Caribbean destinations can use technology, innovation and strategic investment to strengthen tourism competitiveness while ensuring growth benefits local communities.

The conference arrives at a critical time for Caribbean tourism as destinations navigate major global shifts, including rapid technological development, changing traveller preferences, climate challenges and rising international competition. SOTIC 2026 will explore strategies to build a more resilient tourism sector that balances economic expansion with social inclusion and environmental responsibility.

Through discussions on future-ready tourism models, the event will focus on how Caribbean nations can maximise emerging opportunities, improve destination resilience and create long-term value for residents, businesses and visitors across the region.

The nation is working to expand its tourism sector as part of a wider economic diversification strategy, supported by increased investment and efforts to create long-term value from its natural and cultural assets.

Hosting SOTIC 2026 in Georgetown provides Guyana with an opportunity to bring together regional and global tourism stakeholders while highlighting its emerging visitor economy. The event is expected to support wider conversations on the future direction of Caribbean tourism and showcase Guyana’s approach towards responsible, inclusive and sustainable tourism growth.

President Ali, who assumed office as Guyana’s ninth executive president in August 2020 and commenced his second term in September 2025, brings extensive expertise in economic strategy, public policy and national development to SOTIC 2026. Prior to his presidency, he served as a member of the National Assembly and held key government portfolios, including Housing and Water, as well as Tourism, Industry and Commerce.

He has earned a doctorate in urban and regional planning from the University of the West Indies, supported by additional academic and professional qualifications in areas such as manpower planning, international business, finance and international commercial law.

Organised by the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), SOTIC serves as the region’s leading platform for tourism dialogue, bringing together government tourism officials, industry leaders, private-sector representatives, international partners, researchers, media professionals, youth representatives and other stakeholders to address major challenges and opportunities shaping Caribbean tourism.

The 2026 edition will focus on key themes including tourism data and intelligence, digital innovation, emerging technologies, climate adaptation, regenerative tourism, destination competitiveness, inclusive development and the involvement of future tourism leaders. This will mark the first time Guyana hosts the influential regional tourism conference.

The event schedule will begin with CTO business meetings on October 5–6, followed by the main SOTIC conference on October 7–8. The Regional Tourism Youth Congress will be held on October 8, while Destination Media Briefings will bring the week-long programme to a close on October 9.
