Alabama kicks off the first Skydog Festival as music makers of The Shoals create a new three-day event to commemorate the area’s legacy. The festival will feature performances and other events to celebrate the region’s American music heritage as well as the region’s role in the development of southern rock. Skydog: The Shoals Experience draws inspiration from guitarist Duane Allman’s legacy to invite international and out-of-state guests to explore The Shoals and the heritage of American music’s creative community.

Taking place in one of the United States’ most iconic music regions, the three-day event will showcase The Shoals’ rich artistic heritage through live performances, culinary experiences, film screenings, art displays, storytelling sessions and cultural programmes. The festival aims to celebrate the area’s deep connection to American music and its influence on generations of artists.

Named after the legendary guitarist Duane Allman’s famous nickname, “SkyDog” highlights The Shoals’ historic role as the birthplace of Southern rock and honours the region’s enduring contribution to the global music scene.

“The Shoals has a music story that simply cannot be replicated anywhere else, and SkyDog gives visitors a new way to experience that legacy firsthand,” said Glenda Allred, director of the Alabama Tourism Department“Events like this create an important economic impact by bringing visitors into our hotels, restaurants, attractions and local businesses, while introducing new audiences to Alabama. We are excited to welcome SkyDog and believe it has tremendous potential to grow into another signature tourism experience for our state.”

The inaugural SkyDog: The Shoals Experience will feature a diverse lineup of celebrated musicians, including Jackson Dean, Wet Willie featuring Jimmy Hall, Maggie Rose, The FAME Gang, Spooner Oldham, Mike Farris, Gary Nichols, Scott Sharrard, Peter Levin, Sons of Legion and other artists connected to the iconic Muscle Shoals music legacy.

More than a music festival, SkyDog will offer visitors a deeper journey into the history and culture of The Shoals. The event will include regional cuisine, film showcases, art displays, artist conversations, special exhibitions and the Southbound Market, featuring more than 40 local makers, creators and businesses. Guests will also have opportunities to discover legendary music landmarks, including FAME Recording Studios and Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, which helped shape the sound of generations of artists.

The Renaissance Shoals Resort & Spa and Shoals Convention Center will serve as the main venue for the weekend, offering views of the Tennessee River and Wilson Dam. The celebration will conclude on Sunday with the SkyDog Soul Sunday Brunch, combining Southern-inspired cuisine with live entertainment while supporting the Alabama Sheriffs Youth Ranches and FAME Girls Ranch.

SkyDog further strengthens Alabama’s growing music tourism appeal by creating a new platform for travellers to experience the influential artists, historic recording studios and cultural stories that transformed The Shoals into a globally recognised centre of American music.
