Laos looks at influx of Chinese visitors

In 2023, the authorities of Lao tourism hope that almost 368,000 nationals from China will visit Laos. This would an increase of 21 percent compared to last year.


At a meeting arranged last Friday of the Department of Tourism Development of the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, the above-mentioned figure was cited. This meeting was organized to talk about plans to arrange the influx of tourists from China; the Lao National TV reported this on Monday.


The Lao government and private sectors are setting up for the influx of Chinese tourists after it was listed among countries greenlit by the government of China for outbound group tours.


Before the massive pandemic hit the world in 2020, around 1,022,727 tourists in 2019 had come from China. This accounted for 21 percent of the total number of tourists. Roughly, 45,249 Chinese visitors in 2022 had come to Laos.


Phonemaly Inthaphome, Director General of the Tourism Development Department, produced a draft plan in regard to the preparations for Chinese tourists. This outlined the situation in general and as well as the viewpoint concerning the tourism market of China, preparations to greet Chinese visitors and the advantages and disadvantages related to the rise in the visitors coming to Laos.


He urged the Department related to Tourism Development and other sectors to get tourism products better and change the industry into a modern and efficient service provider.
