Lithuania’s capital Vilnius ranks as Europe’s top budget city break, offering rich history, scenic beauty, and weekend stays for under £120 per person.

Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, has been named the most affordable European destination for city breaks, according to recent research by Post Office Money. The study, which analyzed the average cost of weekend getaways across major European cities, highlighted Vilnius as offering exceptional value for travelers seeking a budget-friendly escape without compromising on cultural richness or scenic charm.

The report revealed that a weekend stay for two in Vilnius could cost as little as £236.51, which averages to just £118 per person. That total includes two nights in a 3-star hotel, meals, drinks, local transportation, sightseeing, and general city expenses. A large part of the city’s affordability stems from its remarkably low accommodation prices, with an average weekend stay in a 3-star hotel costing only around £131. Other data sources, such as travel aggregator Kayak, estimate the average nightly rate for a double room in Vilnius to be just £75 — a fraction of what travelers would pay in Western Europe.

When comparing Vilnius to more expensive cities, the difference is stark. Amsterdam, the most expensive destination on the list, costs travelers a whopping £462 for a similar two-day break. This makes Vilnius less than half the price of 18 other European cities surveyed, reinforcing its status as the top choice for a budget-friendly yet enriching getaway.

The affordability doesn’t stop at hotels. Dining and drinking in Vilnius also come at a reasonable cost. According to Post Office Money, the average price for a pint is about £3.79, based on April exchange rates. Fintech company Wise offers a similar estimate, suggesting that a pint of domestic beer ranges from €3 to €5 — or between £2.53 and £4.21 — putting the average at €4.50. A 330ml bottle of beer or lager in a local café or bar was recorded at approximately £2.77.

Eastern Europe dominated the affordability rankings. Following Vilnius, the list included budget-friendly destinations such as Krakow, Riga, Budapest, Bratislava, Prague, and Warsaw. Lisbon, Portugal’s charming capital, secured the runner-up spot but still had prices more than 10% higher than those found in Vilnius.

But Vilnius isn’t just about low costs — it’s a city rich in culture and history. At the heart of the capital lies Vilnius Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its baroque architecture, narrow cobbled streets, and historic charm. From grand squares to cozy alleys, the Old Town offers a glimpse into centuries past.

One of the city’s central landmarks is Cathedral Square, home to the neoclassical Vilnius Cathedral and its striking bell tower, a symbol of the city. From here, visitors can stroll down Gediminas Avenue, the city’s main thoroughfare, which is lined with cultural landmarks including the Lithuanian National Drama Theatre and the Museum of Genocide Victims. The avenue also features an array of boutiques, cafes, and eateries, offering a seamless blend of history and modern life.

Culinary adventurers will also find much to enjoy. Lithuanian cuisine is hearty, unique, and full of tradition. Must-try local dishes include cepelinai — potato dumplings filled with meat or curd — šaltibarščiai, a vibrant pink cold beetroot soup often served with boiled potatoes and sour cream, and kugelis, a rich potato pudding. Despite its size, Vilnius offers a surprisingly diverse culinary scene, with international restaurants and innovative bistros complementing traditional fare.

One particularly noteworthy venue is Peronas, a popular restaurant and bar housed in a former train station. Known for its lively atmosphere, craft cocktails, and eclectic décor, it also hosts live music and outdoor seating, making it a favorite among locals and tourists alike.

Beer lovers will want to stop by Alaus Biblioteka, or “Beer Library,” a specialty bar offering over 250 varieties of beer from around the world. With knowledgeable staff, a cozy ambiance, and an extensive menu, it’s a paradise for craft brew enthusiasts.

Beyond the capital, Lithuania offers a wealth of natural and cultural attractions. The country has a population of approximately 2.8 million, with around 540,000 residing in Vilnius as of 2021, according to the United Nations. Its location in the Baltic region places it at the crossroads of history and geography. Lithuania shares borders with Latvia to the north, Belarus to the east and south, and Poland to the south. To the southwest lies Kaliningrad Oblast, a Russian exclave, and to the west, it borders Sweden across the Baltic Sea.

Vilnius serves as an ideal base for exploring not only Lithuania’s diverse offerings but also the broader Baltic region. With its low travel costs, rich heritage, and growing reputation as a cultural hotspot, Vilnius is quickly becoming the go-to destination for savvy travelers looking to make the most of their European adventure — without the premium price tag.
