Europe Travel Growth Surges As Airports Record Over Three Percent July And 3.1% August Passenger Rise In 2026

European airports recorded stronger passenger growth during the peak summer travel season of 2026, with traffic increasing across the continent despite uneven market conditions and ongoing global challenges. Passenger numbers across the European airport network grew by 3.9% in July and 3.1% in August 2026 compared with the same months in 2025, marking a clear acceleration from the slower 1.3% growth recorded in the second quarter of the year.
The latest summer performance data from ACI Europe highlights a continued recovery in European aviation, supported by resilient leisure demand, expanding low-cost carrier operations, and improved international connectivity. However, growth varied significantly by region; emerging markets achieved substantial gains while several major Western European hubs experienced flat or declining results.

Regional Divergence Across Peak Holiday Months
The European airport sector entered the busiest travel months of the year with renewed momentum following a muted second quarter. Passenger growth accelerated as millions of travelers returned to European destinations for summer holidays, city breaks, and long-haul connections.

Airports outside the EU+ market delivered the strongest performance, with passenger traffic rising 6.6% in July and 6.0% in August compared to the previous year. EU+ airports also posted positive results, though growth was more moderate at 3.4% in July and 2.5% in August.
Regional variances reflected differing levels of tourism demand, airline capacity allocations, and the influence of geopolitical developments on travel itineraries. Several smaller aviation markets capitalized on surging international interest, whereas mature markets faced capacity constraints and slower expansion.

Other top-performing EU+ markets included Slovenia (+19.3%), Estonia (+16.4%), Hungary (+13.0%), and Malta (+12.3%).
Conversely, several EU+ nations experienced declines. Iceland recorded the sharpest drop among EU+ countries, with passenger traffic falling 9.3%. Austria followed with a 6.0% decrease, while France dropped by 1.7%, Cyprus by 1.5%, Norway by 0.3%, and Germany by 0.2%.
Among Europe’s largest tourism economies, Italy and Spain continued to benefit from robust summer demand. Italian airports logged a passenger traffic increase of 5.2%, while Spain grew by 4.7%. The United Kingdom posted a modest gain of 0.9%.

Airports outside the EU+ zone registered some of the continent’s steepest traffic increases during August 2026, underlining the expanding role of non-traditional destinations.
North Macedonia led this group with passenger growth of 34.8%, followed by Montenegro (+28.6%) and Albania (+20.7%). Israel recorded a 19.5% increase, Armenia grew by 14.2%, Moldova by 12.6%, and Uzbekistan by 10.5%.
Türkiye, the largest aviation market in this tier, recorded a 4.4% increase. The country continued to leverage its strategic geographical position connecting Europe, Asia, and the Middle East to capture international transit traffic.
Mixed Outcomes for Europe’s Busiest Mega-Hubs
Europe’s largest airports recorded mixed results in August 2026. Mega-hubs handling over 40 million passengers annually averaged a modest overall growth rate of 1.3%.
Istanbul Airport was Europe’s busiest hub during the peak summer month, handling 8.6 million passengers in August—a 3.0% increase year-over-year. London Heathrow ranked second with 7.9 million passengers (-2.1%), while Paris Charles de Gaulle handled 6.9 million passengers (-1.1%).

Other major hubs delivered stronger figures: Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen surged 9.5%, while Madrid and Barcelona grew 4.9% and 4.5% respectively. London Gatwick contracted by 3.4%, while Amsterdam Schiphol remained flat (+0.1%). Frankfurt (-0.3%) and Munich (-0.5%) both posted minor declines.
Regional Airports Outpace Major Hubs
Large and medium-sized regional airports proved to be the core growth drivers over the summer. Large airports (handling 10 million to 25 million passengers annually) recorded average growth of 4.8%, while medium airports (1 million to 10 million passengers) expanded by 5.2%.
This growth was primarily propelled by targeted low-cost carrier expansions and selective new long-haul connections. Among large regional airports, Tirana posted the highest increase at 20.7%, followed by Tel Aviv (+19.5%), Tashkent (+16.6%), Ankara (+13.3%), and Venice (+12.7%).
Medium-sized airports recorded even steeper gains: Bratislava traffic jumped 75.9%, Trapani rose 52.3%, Podgorica grew 47.6%, Skopje surged 34.8%, and Palermo climbed 32.3%.
Long-Term Outlook for European Aviation

Aircraft movements across the continent grew 2.7% in July and 2.2% in August 2026 compared to 2025 levels.
While primary international hubs retain the largest overall passenger volumes, regional and emerging airports are capturing an increasing share of market growth. The performance of summer 2026 demonstrates that European aviation demand remains durable, with market dynamics shifting toward alternative destinations, expanded point-to-point regional routes, and a more diversified airport landscape.
