Miami International Airport (MIA) is on the brink of an important achievement as it readies itself to reintroduce three out of four Concourse D Skytrain stations on March 29. Following thorough repairs and testing spanning six months to tackle structural concerns, the Skytrain is set to improve passenger convenience and operational efficiency once more.

I am thrilled that most of our Concourse D Skytrain will soon be operational again. Our unwavering commitment to passenger and employee safety prompted the temporary suspension of Skytrain services last September. With the impending reopening, travelers can expect seamless access to most Concourse D gates in just minutes.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava announced that the Skytrain, which was built 25 years ago, had been temporarily decommissioned on September 15, 2023. This decision came after regulatory inspections uncovered structural concerns near station 1, necessitating thorough evaluations to ensure public safety. Subsequent diligent repair efforts have now cleared the path for the safe resumption of Skytrain services between stations 2, 3, and 4 (gates D20 to D60), with station 1 (near gate D16) expected to rejoin operations by summer. The total cost incurred for these repairs amounts to $4.2 million.

During the period of interim service until the full restoration of Skytrain operations, Miami International Airport (MIA) will continue to offer a courtesy trolley service for passengers traveling between stations 1 and 2. Moreover, passengers requiring wheelchair assistance are advised to coordinate with American Airlines prior to their flight.

Miami-Dade County is also making significant investments in the modernization of MIA, with an extraordinary $7 billion dedicated to capital improvements and $1.7 billion allocated for maintenance upgrades under the ambitious Modernization in Action (M.I.A.) Plan.

Under the M.I.A. Plan, all 616 elevators, escalators, and walkways at MIA requiring upgrades are being replaced or renovated. Currently, only 9% of these units are out of service for repair or modernization. The plan includes a schedule to upgrade or replace at least 30 conveyance units annually over the next five to seven years. Additionally, MIA is replacing or refurbishing all 126 passenger boarding bridges, with 32 bridges already completed and 10 more scheduled for completion each year until 2028. Furthermore, renovations are underway for MIA’s 207 public restrooms, with 33 already modernized in concourses D, H, and J, and another 32 slated for renovation in 2024 across other concourses.

MIA is reaffirming its dedication to offering passengers an exceptional travel experience as it works to rejuvenate its infrastructure. Recently, MIA launched the “I AM MIA” campaign, a transformative initiative aimed at enhancing the customer experience. The campaign involves deploying dedicated Lightning Crew teams comprising highly trained employees to patrol the terminal for immediate maintenance issues. Additionally, these teams will proactively address passenger inquiries and concerns, significantly elevating the overall customer experience at the airport.

Miami International Airport, America’s busiest airport for international freight and the second busiest for international passengers, is receiving an unprecedented investment of $7 billion in capital improvements and $1.7 billion in maintenance upgrades. MIA offers more flights to Latin America and the Caribbean than any other U.S. airport and is also the leading economic engine for Miami-Dade County and the state of Florida, generating business revenue of $31.9 billion and approximately 60 percent of all international visitors to Florida annually.
