As the bustling summer travel season begins, Mexico continues to see an inflow of international tourists.
The Institute of National Statistics and Geography (INEGI) reported that international tourist arrivals grew by 9.3 percent in May to 3.3 million individuals, representing a spike of more than 276,000 over the same month in 2022.
In May, the aggregate total for foreign and domestic travel reached 5.9 million persons, a 14.2 percent increase over the previous year. While visitor numbers increased, per capita expenditure fell 7.4 percent to an average of $652 per tourist, amounting to around $15 million less.
Although, spending was down in May, the large number of arrivals helped overall income increase by 1.2 percent, with air travellers contributing for a higher average expenditure of $1,096.
Last month, Esteban Jesus Amaro Mauricio, Director of the Quintana Roo Sargassum Monitoring Network, and other officials from cities along the Mexican Caribbean revealed that distance, speed of travel, and currents have resulted in experts forecasting a non-existent flow of sargassum seaweed this summer.
