Mexico‘s tourism sector continues to display remarkable resilience and growth in travel sector, as evidenced by the latest government data showing a 3.6% increase in foreign tourist arrivals in January 2024 compared to the same month in the previous year.

This upward trend signals a robust recovery for Mexico’s tourism industry, which has been bouncing back steadily from the downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Each month of the past year has seen a year-on-year increase in the number of international visitors, underscoring the enduring appeal of Mexico as a top travel destination.

The national statistics agency, INEGI, reported that January 2024 saw 3.64 million international tourists visiting Mexico, a slight increase from January 2023’s count of 3.51 million foreign visitors. These travellers not only came in greater numbers but also contributed significantly to the local economy, spending US $2.94 billion during their stay—a 4.6% increase from the $2.81 billion spent by foreign tourists a year ago. This spending boost is a positive sign for Mexico‘s tourism-related businesses and the broader economy.

Despite the customary decline in tourism following December—the peak month for visits to Mexico due to the year-end holidays and the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe celebrations—the overall number of arrivals from abroad, including Mexican citizens, rose year-on-year in January. INEGI highlighted that overall arrivals increased from 6.48 million in January 2023 to 6.78 million in January 2024, marking a 4.6% growth. This increase is partly attributed to a significant surge in Mexicans traveling internationally, either by air or across the border, with more than 4.95 million Mexican residents traveling abroad in January 2024, a substantial 20.3% jump from January 2023.

Moreover, the number of Mexican tourists—those crossing the border and spending at least one night outside the country—also rose, from 1.33 million in January last year to 1.59 million in January this year. This growth in outbound tourism from Mexico underscores a broader trend of increased travel activity both into and out of the country.

While tourism typically experiences a slight dip in February, even with the leap year adjustment, March is anticipated to be the third-best month for tourism in Mexico, following December and January. The spring break period, in particular, attracts a significant number of U.S. students to Mexican beaches, further bolstering the tourism sector. This pattern of travel and spending highlights Mexico’s ongoing appeal as a vibrant and diverse destination for international and domestic travelers alike, contributing to the sustained growth of its tourism industry.
