The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has expressed support for Morocco’s ‘Airports 2030 Strategy,’ a comprehensive initiative designed to modernize the country’s airport infrastructure, enhance the overall passenger experience, and solidify Morocco’s status as a leading global and regional aviation hub.

Aviation plays a crucial role in Morocco’s economy, contributing significantly to employment and economic output. In 2023, the aviation sector, including tourism linked to air travel, supported approximately 856,000 jobs and accounted for 7.9% of the nation’s GDP, valued at $11.2 billion. Furthermore, 93% of passengers departing from Moroccan airports, totaling 11.7 million, were headed for international destinations, while the country processed around 77,900 tonnes of air cargo.

“Given the critical and growing importance of aviation to Morocco’s economy, the launch of the ‘Airports 2030 Strategy’ will have a far-reaching and positive impact on Morocco’s economic and social development. Aviation contributes 7.9% to Morocco’s economy and has grown by 68.1% over the past decade. A comprehensive strategy on airport infrastructure investment will help secure future growth. Airlines are partners in this growth, and it is critical that they are broadly engaged in realizing the strategy with a sharp focus on cost-efficiency,” said Kamil Al-Awadhi, IATA Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East.

The Moroccan Government’s Key Priorities

To maximize the benefits of airport infrastructure investments, IATA has outlined three critical priorities for Morocco:

  1. Cost-Efficiency: To enhance connectivity as Morocco upgrades its airport infrastructure, fair and competitive charges, taxes, and fees are essential. The government must ensure collaboration with stakeholders and adherence to global best practices to avoid imposing unnecessary financial burdens on airlines and passengers.
  2. Capacity-Building: Infrastructure investments should be accompanied by a focus on human resources development. A skilled workforce is crucial for supporting airport modernization and accommodating the anticipated growth in the aviation sector.
  3. Consumer Regulation: Effective regulation is key to fostering a thriving aviation industry. Morocco should avoid adopting ineffective consumer laws from Europe and the United States. The development of the Passenger Rights Law should focus on creating a framework that aligns with global standards and best practices.

“It is no coincidence that the ‘Airports 2030 Strategy’ aligns with Morocco being a co-host of the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Morocco will be on the world stage which is a great incentive to be ready to show off Morocco’s growing strength as an aviation hub linking Africa, Europe and North America,” said Al-Awadhi.
