Austrian Airlines has been granted a new three-year permit to operate under the European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS). This is the first full three-year permit for Austrian Airlines. EMAS renewal speaks to the environmental management system and confirms that it supports efforts to improve the airline’s environmental performance.

The airline has maintained EMAS validation since 2023. The latest renewal reflects the continued development of structured environmental processes designed to monitor performance, strengthen accountability and support measurable improvements over time.

Environmental Management Embedded Across Austrian Airlines

Environmental responsibility has been integrated into different areas of Austrian Airlines’ daily operations rather than being limited to a single department. More than 40 environmental coordinators are currently working across various parts of the organisation, helping individual teams incorporate environmental considerations into routine business activities.

These coordinators provide specialist knowledge within their respective departments and help connect broader environmental objectives with practical operational measures. Their role supports the implementation of environmental priorities across the airline while encouraging individual business units to identify opportunities for further improvement.

The decentralised approach also allows environmental considerations to become part of everyday decision-making. By involving employees across multiple operational and administrative functions, Austrian Airlines aims to ensure that its environmental management system remains active throughout the organisation.

Austrian Airlines Publishes 2025 Environmental Report

Alongside the renewed EMAS validation, Austrian Airlines has released its Environmental Report covering the 2025 reporting year. The report provides a detailed overview of the environmental measures introduced by the airline and outlines the progress made across key areas of its environmental programme.

The publication forms part of the transparency requirements associated with EMAS and provides information on how the airline is managing environmental priorities and tracking improvements.

With its renewed registration, Austrian Airlines enters its next EMAS validation period while continuing to develop its environmental management processes and integrate environmental responsibility across its wider operations.

2025 Environmental Progress and Sustainability Milestones

During 2025, Austrian Airlines continued to strengthen its environmental performance through a series of initiatives focused on improving efficiency, reducing emissions and increasing resource sustainability.

One of the airline’s major achievements was completing the first full year of AeroSHARK operations across its fleet of four Boeing 777-200ER aircraft. Developed by Lufthansa Technik and BASF, the technology uses a specialised surface film based on the structure of shark skin. The coating helps reduce aerodynamic resistance during flight, allowing aircraft to operate more efficiently.

Operational results from the first year showed that AeroSHARK reduced aerodynamic drag by approximately 0.7%. This improvement contributed to fuel savings of around 930 tonnes of kerosene and helped avoid nearly 3,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. Austrian Airlines became the first airline globally to introduce the technology on Boeing 777-200ER aircraft, highlighting its focus on adopting innovative solutions to improve aviation efficiency.

The airline also made progress in reducing waste generated from onboard services. The proportion of recyclable plastic and aluminium materials used in passenger service items increased from 76% in 2024 to approximately 80% by the end of 2025.

Austrian Airlines aims to achieve a 100% recyclable share by 2027, with continued attention on improving food packaging solutions and passenger-facing products. This initiative forms part of the airline’s broader effort to reduce waste and create more sustainable processes throughout its operations.

Austrian Airlines’ Long-Term Environmental Strategy

Austrian Airlines’ sustainability approach focuses on multiple areas, including fleet modernisation, the increased use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and operational improvements designed to reduce environmental impact.

Through investments in newer aircraft technologies, efficiency programmes and responsible resource management, the airline continues to support the wider aviation industry’s transition towards lower-carbon operations.

The combination of innovative aircraft solutions, improved recycling practices and long-term decarbonisation measures forms a central part of Austrian Airlines’ environmental strategy as it works towards achieving more sustainable aviation operations.
