Tourism operators in Nova Scotia said that while they’re getting to witness more license plates from outside the Atlantic provinces, the majority of visitors are still local residents.

The provincial tourism income estimates for 2020 are expected to be below $900 million. That’s $1.7 billion less compared to 2019, a shortagethat’s mostly due to non-residents being unable to travel to Nova Scotia.

For majority of this year, tourism operators had to rely more on residents traveling around their home province.
They observed that Nova Scotians are staying longer and booking more experiences.

Grape Escapes Nova Scotia Wine Tours, which takes people to wineries in the Annapolis Valley, said that they have been welcoming mostly locals this summer.

However, owner and tour director Susan Downey Lim said that the scenario isgradually changing.

“It’s heavy Atlantic Canadian, but we’re seeing a huge influx of Ontario guests, Quebec and it’s starting to be western Canada and B.C. as well now, too,” said Lim. “And a little bit from the U.S.”

Due to the altering pandemic restrictions, many people from outside of the province had to rearrange spring visits to late summer, Lim said.

However, people have been rebooking tours. Their daily wine and lunch escapes have proven especially popular.
