The Maldives have announced an entirely new collection of optional airline services for customers travelling between the islands of the Maldives and overseas destinations, with Maldivian, the national flag carrier of the Maldives, introducing Journey+ as a brand new service to give customers more options before and during their flight experience. Announced back in August 2026, this innovative approach combines priority airport services, extra luggage allowance, access to lounges, selected cabin upgrades and pre-ordered drinks in a single product. Journey+ is applicable to tourists traveling to the resort islands of the Indian Ocean archipelago, where a domestic flight and seaplanes transfers may become a part of the overall trip from an international destination. Journey+ provides customers with the opportunity to pick those additional services which suit his needs, instead of purchasing them all as a set. Five options will be available during the initial phase, while the further phases are expected to include advance seat selections and other additional services.

Priority Services for Domestic and International Passengers

Journey+ Premier offers priority check-in and baggage handling for domestic passengers. International passengers can also access priority boarding through the service, alongside the applicable airport priority facilities.

These options may be useful for visitors travelling with families, carrying holiday equipment or managing tight connections between flights. However, priority services do not guarantee shorter queues in every situation or eliminate the need to arrive at the airport within the airline’s required check-in period.

For domestic departures, the airline lists availability at Velana International Airport in Malé, Maafaru International Airport, Hanimaadhoo International Airport and Gan International Airport.

Malé is the principal gateway for many international visitors, while the other airports provide access to different parts of the country. Travellers should confirm that their selected service is available at the airport from which they are departing.

Extra Baggage Can Be Purchased in Advance

Journey+ Bags allows passengers to purchase additional baggage allowance before departure at rates lower than the airline’s airport walk-up charges.

For domestic flights, the airline lists additional baggage options of 3kg, 6kg, 9kg and 12kg. The advance purchase option may suit travellers carrying diving equipment, photography gear, extra clothing or supplies for longer island stays, subject to the airline’s baggage conditions.

The service also gives passengers an opportunity to organise baggage requirements before reaching the airport. Travellers should check the allowance attached to their ticket and the additional weight permitted for their specific flight before purchasing an extra allowance.

This is particularly relevant when an itinerary includes several domestic sectors, since baggage arrangements and aircraft capacity can differ across routes.

Lounge Access and Cabin Upgrades

Journey+ Relax provides paid access to selected Maldivian lounges, giving eligible passengers a place to wait before departure. Access is subject to the lounges included in the programme and the conditions attached to the purchased service.

For tourists arriving in Malé before a domestic connection, lounge access may offer an alternative to waiting in the general terminal area. Passengers should verify the location and operating arrangements of the relevant lounge before purchasing access.

Journey+ Upgrade allows passengers on selected international flights to request an upgrade to a higher cabin class, including Premium or Business Class where available. The upgrade depends on aircraft type, available seats and the applicable fee.

The option provides additional flexibility for travellers who want a different onboard experience without initially booking the higher cabin. It does not guarantee an upgrade, and availability should be confirmed with Maldivian before departure.

Pre-Ordered Refreshments for Island Flights

Journey+ Bites allows passengers on domestic services to pre-order a snack and beverage combination. The option gives travellers an opportunity to arrange refreshments before boarding, which can be useful on journeys connecting remote islands with Malé.

Domestic flights are an important part of the country’s tourism infrastructure because many resorts and inhabited islands are separated by considerable distances across the archipelago. Depending on the destination, visitors may combine an international flight with a domestic air service, a speedboat or a seaplane transfer.

Passengers should confirm their complete transfer arrangements with their resort or travel provider, particularly when separate bookings are involved. A domestic flight arrival does not automatically guarantee a connecting boat or seaplane transfer.

How Travellers Can Purchase Journey+

According to Maldivian, the Journey+ products can be bought via their call centre, ticketing office, passenger sales agents, general sales agents, Viber and WhatsApp contacts. Booking should be done at least 24 hours in advance prior to the departure time. Passengers need to study the services offered, cost and requirements for purchasing beforehand. Services may vary depending on the route and type of flight, and travellers have to save proof of any extra services booked. The company states that advanced seat selection and some other services are expected to be added under the second phase of the development program. Such services should not be mixed with those that are currently offered and relate to priority services, baggage, lounge access, upgrades in some international classes of service and domestic refreshments. This way, Journey+ gives holidaymakers in the Maldives more opportunities to arrange their flights.
