The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) has officially entered into a partnership with the Meaningful Tourism Centre Ltd (MTC), a nonprofit committed to promoting sustainable and ethical practices in travel and tourism under the Meaningful Tourism framework. This partnership was formalized with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the Nepal-India-China Expo 2025 (NICE 2025) held in Pokhara, Nepal, on Tuesday, February 25.
This MoU lays the groundwork for a cooperative effort between the two organizations to launch significant projects that support meaningful tourism. It also underscores their mutual commitment to molding the future of the tourism sector through sustainable growth and broad-based cooperation.

PATA CEO Noor Ahmad Hamid said, “This partnership marks an important step in strengthening our commitment to tourism that is both responsible and impactful. By joining forces with the Meaningful Tourism Centre, we aim to enhance industry awareness and support initiatives that not only enrich traveller experiences but also bring tangible benefits to local communities, cultural heritage, and the environment.”
Meaningful Tourism Centre CEO Professor Dr Wolfgang Georg Arlt said, “Only a holistic approach which brings benefits and satisfaction to all stakeholders in tourism and hospitality will bring back the positive image our industry used to have as a provider of joy, new experiences and even peace. We have to organise our activities in a way which makes us part of the solution instead of being seen as part of the problem.”

Under the new partnership, PATA and MTC will collaborate to establish and distribute best practices, encourage industry dialogues, and promote research and development efforts, including educational programs and workshops. They will also engage in mutual activities like speaking opportunities and the exchange of industry insights to enhance more impactful travel experiences.
Meaningful Tourism prioritizes a holistic approach that extends beyond mere sustainability. It aims to ensure that all parties involved in tourism — including travelers, businesses, workers, local communities, governments, and the environment — receive fair benefits. This concept underscores the importance of responsible travel that enhances cultural understanding, safeguards environmental resources, and improves the overall quality of the experience for both guests and hosts.
