A Russian girl lost her life while nine others were injured when a speedboat struck rocks off the coast of Phuket on Sunday afternoon.
The driver’s and assistant’s drug test results, however, have not yet been revealed.
On Monday, the media was informed by Phuket’s deputy chief of health that boat driver Natthawut Wongwilai, 41, had an amphetamine-classified substance found in his system after a preliminary examination.
Results of a drug test conducted on the speedboat assistant are still pending.
Around 3:20 p.m. on Sunday, the boat carrying seven Russian tourists returning from the Phi Phi islands struck rocks close to Koh Mai Thon island at a high speed. At the time, neither the waves nor the weather presented any threat to boats.
Seven other Russian tourists were hurt in the crash, three of whom have already been released from hospitals. A five-year-old Russian girl also perished in the accident. The boat driver and the assistant were the other two injured.
One of the injured was a 45-year-old Russian woman who had a broken pelvis and a punctured liver. A three-year-old Russian child sustained a head injury, and a Russian man suffered a ruptured lung.
This tragic event serves as a reminder of how crucial safety precautions are when engaging in water activities, particularly in crowded tourist locations. In order to lessen the possibility of maritime accidents, it also highlights how crucial it is to closely adhere to regulations and offer thorough safety briefings.
Many people are sending their condolences and best wishes to the family and loved ones of the young Russian girl who perished in the tragic speedboat accident off the coast of Phuket while the investigation is ongoing.
