Thailand’s sustainable tourism drive has gained further momentum in October 2026 after three ONYX Hospitality Group properties in Pattaya and Bangsaen received recognition at the Ultimate Thailand Green Tourism Showcase 2026, presented by Thailand’s Department of Tourism. Amari Pattaya and OZO North Pattaya were honoured in the Creativity & Innovation category, while Amari Bangsaen secured recognition in the Unique WOW Experience category, highlighting the growing role of sustainability, locally connected experiences and resource efficiency in Thailand’s hospitality industry.

The three awards provide a new tourism-industry spotlight on the way environmental and social considerations are being integrated into hotel operations. Rather than limiting sustainability to isolated environmental projects, ONYX is incorporating energy and water efficiency, waste management, carbon reduction, community engagement, environmental standards and responsible sourcing into a wider operating framework. For travellers, the development also points towards a changing hospitality experience in Thailand. Sustainable hotel operations are increasingly being connected with the destinations surrounding individual properties, including local communities, producers and experiences that can give visitors a stronger connection to the places in which they stay.

Three Thailand Hotels Secure Green Tourism Recognition

The Ultimate Thailand Green Tourism Showcase 2026 recognition covers three properties in two important coastal destinations.

The awards are particularly relevant from a destination perspective because Pattaya and Bangsaen are established coastal tourism areas in Chonburi. Hotels form a central part of their visitor economies, meaning improvements in resource management, waste practices and energy efficiency can contribute to the broader sustainability of these destinations.

The recognised properties demonstrate an approach covering several elements of sustainability management rather than a single environmental measure. These include energy efficiency, water efficiency, waste management, carbon reduction, community engagement, stakeholder participation and environmental standards. That combination is increasingly important for the tourism sector because environmental performance is connected not only with hotel operations but also with the long-term management of the destinations in which accommodation providers operate.

ONYX for Planet Moves Sustainability Into Everyday Hospitality

Behind the awards is ONYX for Planet, the hospitality group’s sustainability framework designed to integrate environmental, social and governance principles, commonly known as ESG, across business operations and hotel management. The framework sits alongside the group’s Sustainably Crafted Hospitality philosophy.

Its central principle is that sustainability should not function as a separate programme that remains largely invisible to hotel guests. Instead, environmental and social considerations are increasingly being incorporated into resource management, operational decisions, purchasing practices and visitor experiences.

The approach covers responsible procurement and resource management as well as support for local communities and producers. Talent development is another component, while guest experiences are designed to create stronger connections between travellers and the destinations they visit. For tourism businesses, this represents a wider shift in sustainable hospitality. The emphasis is moving from individual green initiatives towards integrating sustainability throughout the operating model of a property.

Measurement Becomes Central to the Sustainability Strategy

One of the most significant developments is the increasing focus on measurable results. Sustainability programmes in hospitality can include a wide range of activities, but measuring their actual environmental impact allows operators to determine whether those measures are producing meaningful changes.

ONYX is therefore moving beyond a model based principally on individual initiatives towards one that also considers what has changed, what value has been generated and how progress can be measured. This is particularly important in areas such as electricity consumption and greenhouse-gas emissions, where numerical performance indicators can provide clearer evidence of environmental improvements. The company has partnered with CarbonWize to develop an ESG data-management system and greenhouse-gas emissions monitoring framework.

The system is intended to support stronger measurement, transparency and accountability across the organisation. For the hospitality industry, this type of data infrastructure can help properties identify energy-intensive operations, understand emissions and measure progress over time.

International Sustainable Tourism Standards Enter the Picture

The wider programme is also supported by certification. ONYX has achieved GSTC Hotel Multi-site Certification, demonstrating alignment with internationally recognised sustainable-tourism standards. According to the information supplied, the certification was issued by Control Union Singapore Pte. Ltd., a GSTC-accredited certification body. Multi-site certification is particularly relevant to hotel groups because it creates a structure through which sustainability requirements can extend across multiple locations rather than being restricted to a single hotel.

GSTC documentation establishes specific procedures for multi-site certification, including requirements governing the sites covered by certificates and their continued conformity with the relevant criteria. This adds an important layer to the three Thailand awards. The story is therefore not only about individual properties receiving recognition. It also reflects an attempt to place sustainability within a wider operational and standards-based framework.

Bangkok Hotel Targets More Than 40% Energy Reduction

Perhaps the clearest indication of what this sustainability strategy can mean in practical terms comes from Amari Don Muang Airport Bangkok Hotel. A Cooling-as-a-Service solution has been operational at the Bangkok hotel since April 2026, following ONYX’s partnership with SP Group to explore energy-efficiency and renewable-energy solutions across suitable properties in Thailand. The figures attached to the project are substantial.

The system is expected to:

  • reduce energy consumption by more than 40%;
  • save approximately 900,000 kWh of electricity annually; and
  • reduce carbon emissions by around 449 tonnes every year.

These figures give the sustainability strategy a measurable operational dimension. Cooling is particularly relevant to hospitality operations in tropical destinations because maintaining comfortable temperatures across guestrooms, restaurants, meeting areas and other facilities can represent a significant energy requirement.

SP Group already deploys cooling and other sustainable-energy technologies across the Asia-Pacific region. Its projects demonstrate how centralised and technology-led cooling systems can deliver measurable reductions in electricity consumption and emissions. For ONYX, the Bangkok project consequently provides a practical test of how energy-efficient infrastructure can contribute to environmental targets while supporting normal hotel operations.

Green Tourism Is Increasingly Becoming Part of the Guest Experience

The sustainability strategy is not limited to infrastructure. Another element is the effort to connect environmental and social responsibility with the guest experience. This can involve the way resources are managed, how products and services are procured, relationships with local suppliers and the manner in which travellers interact with surrounding communities and destinations.

That approach is significant for the travel sector because sustainable tourism increasingly extends beyond reducing towels, eliminating selected single-use items or asking guests to conserve water. The wider objective is to consider the economic, environmental and social footprint of the entire hospitality experience.

Supporting local producers and communities can help retain more tourism value within destinations, while locally connected experiences can give visitors additional opportunities to engage with the places they visit. The recognition received by the three properties consequently provides another indication of how environmental management and visitor experience are beginning to converge.

Pattaya and Bangsaen Gain From a Broader Responsible Tourism Focus

For Pattaya and Bangsaen, the awards also have a destination-level dimension. Hotels consume resources and interact continuously with local supply chains, employees, communities and visitors. Their sustainability policies can therefore influence impacts extending beyond the boundaries of individual properties.

These elements are particularly relevant in established coastal destinations, where accommodation, attractions, restaurants, transport and other tourism services collectively create substantial demand for infrastructure and natural resources. The Green Tourism Awards therefore offer more than an environmental badge for individual hotels. They illustrate how accommodation businesses can become part of a destination’s broader sustainability ecosystem.

ONYX Links Sustainability With Asia-Pacific Expansion

The longer-term significance becomes clearer when viewed alongside ONYX Hospitality Group’s expansion across the Asia-Pacific region. Sustainability is being positioned as part of the group’s long-term business strategy rather than an initiative limited to the three award-winning Thailand hotels. ONYX for Planet brings together internationally recognised standards, ESG measurement, greenhouse-gas monitoring, operational efficiency, responsible resource management, community engagement and locally relevant action.

The three awards in Pattaya and Bangsaen provide visible recognition of that strategy, while the Bangkok cooling project supplies measurable environmental targets. The Ultimate Thailand Green Tourism Showcase 2026 recognition for Amari Pattaya, OZO North Pattaya and Amari Bangsaen therefore tells a broader story: sustainable tourism is increasingly moving from corporate commitments into hotel operations, destination experiences and measurable environmental performance.

With projected energy savings of more than 40%, approximately 900,000 kWh of electricity conserved annually, around 449 tonnes of annual carbon emissions avoided at the Bangkok project, ESG monitoring and multi-site sustainability certification, ONYX is tying its Thailand hospitality operations more closely to quantifiable environmental outcomes.
