The Thailand tourism industry has further enhanced its connectivity with Indonesia following the arrival of the maiden TransNusa Airlines flight linking Jakarta to Bangkok. The airline will offer a new twice daily direct connection between the two Southeast Asian capitals.

The maiden flight was TransNusa Airlines flight number 8B381 which arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport with 174 Indonesian tourists, flying the route at maximum capacity. This initiative marks a significant effort geared towards enhancing air connectivity in the region and in line with the tourism policy of attracting international tourists into the country by providing better accessibility.

The service is operated using a 174-seat Airbus A320-200 aircraft, providing additional capacity between two important Southeast Asian tourism and business markets.

Thailand Targets Indonesian Independent Travellers, Families and Millennials

TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool said the new service aligns with Thailand’s Airline Focus strategy and the Thai Government’s Ease of Travelling policy, which aim to improve international accessibility and encourage tourism growth.

The route is expected to attract more Indonesian travellers, particularly:

  • Independent travellers
  • Muslim families
  • Millennials
  • Experience-focused visitors

Thailand has identified Indonesia as an important source market due to strong interest in Thai cuisine, shopping, culture, wellness and coastal destinations. The new flights also support Thailand’s tourism positioning around Healing is the New Luxury, promoting wellness experiences, relaxation, food culture and meaningful travel. With direct connectivity improving, more Indonesian visitors can access Thailand’s diverse destinations without complicated travel arrangements.

Indonesia Remains Important Growth Market for Thailand Tourism

Indonesia continues to play a significant role in Thailand’s inbound tourism strategy. According to TAT data, Thailand welcomed 378,881 Indonesian visitors between 1 January and 2 August 2026. Indonesian travellers stayed an average of six days, showing strong potential for tourism spending across accommodation, dining, shopping and experiences.

The market also demonstrates high repeat visitation, with 53 percent of Indonesian visitors returning travellers. Around 85 percent travelled independently, highlighting the importance of flexible travel options and direct flight connectivity.

The leading Thai destinations among Indonesian visitors included:

  • Krabi

Popular activities included Thai food experiences, historical attractions, community-based tourism, spa treatments and beach holidays.

Bangkok Benefits From Stronger Southeast Asian Tourism Connections

The new Jakarta-Bangkok route strengthens links between two major Southeast Asian capitals with growing tourism and business ties. Bangkok remains one of Thailand’s most internationally recognised destinations, attracting visitors through shopping, gastronomy, cultural attractions and urban experiences.

Improved connectivity from Indonesia provides more opportunities for Indonesian travellers to explore Bangkok as well as connect onward to other Thai destinations. The route also supports Thailand’s wider goal of encouraging visitors to explore beyond traditional tourism centres. Travellers arriving through Bangkok can access destinations such as Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai and other regions through Thailand’s extensive domestic transport network.

TransNusa Partnership Supports Future Thailand Indonesia Tourism Expansion

The new flight launch follows strategic agreements signed between TAT, TransNusa Airlines and Traveloka on 4 August 2026. The partnerships focus on destination marketing, travel product development and strengthening air connectivity between Indonesia and Thailand. Under the agreement with TransNusa Airlines, a future Bali-Phuket direct service is planned for late 2026.

The proposed route would further expand travel connections between Indonesia and Thailand’s leading leisure destinations. The partnership includes integrated marketing and public relations activities aimed at increasing destination awareness among Indonesian travellers. By combining airline connectivity with tourism promotion, Thailand aims to create stronger demand and encourage more visitors from Indonesia.

Air Connectivity Becomes Key Driver of Southeast Asian Tourism Growth

The expansion of direct flights reflects a broader trend across Southeast Asia, where improved regional connectivity is becoming essential for tourism growth. Short-haul international travel remains highly attractive for Asian travellers due to convenience, affordability and shorter journey times. For destinations such as Thailand, additional airline capacity helps strengthen competitiveness while allowing tourism businesses to reach new visitor segments.

Airline partnerships also support economic connections beyond tourism, including trade, education and business travel. The Jakarta-Bangkok route demonstrates how aviation expansion can directly influence tourism flows between neighbouring countries.

Thailand Strengthens Position as Indonesia’s Preferred Short-Haul Destination

Thanks to the newly introduced TransNusa flights, the existing airline cooperation, and increasing requests for visiting Thailand from Indonesian tourists, the country can increase its status as one of the most popular short-haul destinations for visitors coming from Indonesia. The possibility of direct connection, combined with a wide variety of tourism offers, cultural features, and well-being opportunities, presents high potential for further development of the market.

In light of continuous changes in the travel industry within Southeast Asia, better airline connections between big cities will become one of the main factors that will influence the future development of tourists movement. The new air route is yet another significant step in the strategy of Thailand to attract quality travelers.
