Thailand has surpassed 21 million foreign travellers in 2026, driven by strong demand from major international markets including China, Malaysia, India, Russia and South Korea, which continue to fuel the country’s tourism recovery. The milestone reflects Thailand’s accelerating global tourism momentum, supported by international visitor spending exceeding 1 trillion baht, strong regional connectivity and renewed interest in its world-renowned destinations, cultural experiences and hospitality offerings. Despite seasonal fluctuations affecting some markets, Thailand’s diverse traveller base has helped maintain its position as one of Asia’s most influential tourism destinations.
Thailand’s international tourism sector continued to show resilience in 2026, welcoming more than 21.28 million foreign visitors during the first nine months of the year despite a moderate decline compared with the previous year. According to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, Thailand recorded 21,280,409 foreign arrivals between January 1 and September 5, 2026, representing a 3.12% decrease compared with the same period last year. During this period, international travellers contributed approximately 1,040,385 million baht in tourism spending, demonstrating continued demand for Thailand’s destinations, hospitality sector and travel experiences.

Malaysia ranked second with 2,708,761 arrivals, benefiting from geographical proximity, strong transport connections and frequent cross-border travel. India secured third place with 1,566,152 visitors, reflecting the growing importance of the Indian market for Thailand’s tourism industry.

Tourism authorities noted that the latest slowdown was partly influenced by the conclusion of major summer holiday periods in key Asian markets, particularly China and Taiwan. As seasonal travel patterns changed, visitor numbers from some short-haul destinations experienced temporary pressure.
Weekly Arrivals Reflect Changing Seasonal Travel Patterns Across Major Markets
Thailand welcomed 472,898 international visitors between August 30 and September 5, recording a weekly decline of 3.78% compared with the previous period. The country received an average of 67,557 foreign visitors per day during the week.
Short-haul markets remained the main source of arrivals, accounting for 331,038 visitors. However, arrivals from nearby Asian countries declined by 6.12% compared with the previous week as several holiday periods ended.
Long-haul markets delivered a more positive performance, contributing 141,860 visitors, representing a 2.18% increase week on week. The improvement highlights continued international interest from distant markets despite the seasonal slowdown following the European summer holiday period.
Malaysia became Thailand’s leading source market during the week, with 74,452 arrivals. Although visitor numbers were slightly lower by 0.22%, Malaysia benefited from several national holidays, including the Melaka Governor’s Birthday, Maulidur Rasul and National Day celebrations.
The Malaysian market moved ahead of China in weekly rankings as holiday travel supported stronger outbound movement. However, tourism officials expect Malaysian arrivals to ease after the conclusion of the National Day holiday period.

India and Singapore Provide Additional Momentum for Thailand Tourism
India showed strong weekly growth, recording 39,122 arrivals, an increase of 18.45% compared with the previous week. The rise was supported by increased travel demand around the Janmashtami holiday period, which created an extended break for many Indian travellers.
Singapore also recorded significant growth, reaching 18,027 arrivals during the week. The market experienced the strongest increase among the five largest weekly source markets, rising by 23.69% due to increased travel activity during the school holiday period.
China remained a major contributor but experienced a decline during the week, with 72,983 arrivals, representing a decrease of 13.85%. Japan contributed 18,710 visitors, although arrivals from the market dropped by 12.24%.
Despite weekly fluctuations, Thailand’s diverse source-market strategy continues to provide stability. The combination of strong regional connectivity, attractive tourism products and international air links has helped the country maintain visitor momentum.
Thailand Tourism Outlook Remains Stable Through Seasonal Transition
Thailand’s tourism authorities expect foreign visitor numbers to remain relatively steady in the coming weeks as global travel markets move beyond peak summer holiday periods.
The latest figures indicate that Thailand remains one of Asia’s most competitive tourism destinations, supported by a wide range of international markets. While short-term seasonal changes have affected arrival patterns, the country continues to attract millions of travellers seeking beaches, cultural experiences, wellness tourism, food destinations and urban attractions.
